wow that is disgusting

It makes me mad knowing that bmw recommends 15,000 mile interval oil changes

oil should be changed every 3 to 5 thousand miles

Whoever drove that car is an idiot

15K service intervals or not, anyone driving 45K past needing an oil change deserves what's coming to them. Sad to see it happen to a BMW though

My sister did this with her first car after college, a Honda Civic. Bought it new, did nothing but put gas in it for two years, then the engine seized. Said she had no idea cars needed the oil changed, and didn't think the check engine light was serious since the car kept running. And sure, the engine sounded funny for about 2 months before it died, but again, it was getting her where she was going, so no problem right?

This is a picture of an E39 540i that saw sythetic oil changes every 7,500 miles. The engine in the picture has 108,000 miles at the time the picture was taken. It looks pristine.

I would say that 3,000 miles to 5,000 miles is wasted money given this photo and I am sure oil analysis would confirm that.

I am sure that longer than 7,500 miles can be acheived with similar results to the photo below.

Wait a car actually has oil and it needs changed, when did they start that?

Similiar thing happened to my neighbors neices car, she drove it for like two years without doing anything but putting gas in it and didn't realize that it needed oil until the whole dipstick assembly fell out.

Every 7500 is perfectly fine for synthetic. Honestly, I think the 15k BMW recommends is fine for most people too. If you're keeping the car longterm, 7500 is probably a good idea though.

As for the other pictures in this thread..

Oil is designed to be changed at set mileage points depending on factors relating to engine, driving style, etc. But beyond this point the olil starts to break down to the point where it's protection goes and the results are here to see in these pics.

I think someone suggested changing a bit earlier which isn't really needed but can't do any harm so if you feel that way then by all means do it if worried.

that engine in the pics, that thing still runs, that's a testimony to bmw's engine reliability at least as far as wear goes

What fucking retard does that? Why was sympathy offered to him? What reason does he have to not change oil besides pure laziness? I really do want to know.
