Gran Turismo 5 and real racing

Well I throw this question out to anyone who does both. How similar are the two granted I know when driving on GT you get none of the feel from the car or a sense of speed or many of the factors that make racing exhilarating. But I have been wanting to do a track day or autocross in my 135 for a while now, thing is I keep shying away from actually doing it. I will appreciate the words of wisdom.

Not to be rude but this could be the dumbest thing i've read in a while. Just do a track day and do yourself a favor. Maybe it's the bourbon speaking, idk.

The driving physics of GT5 are pretty damn close to as real as it gets. I have a 128 but I detune my 135i in GT5 and go at it. It really helped me understand some limits of the car.

It's no substitute but you can learn a lot from it. Drive in cockpit mode and keep lapping the nurburgring.

Auto cross is too small to use GT5 as a comparison. At least the ones in my area are.

Happy driving in RL and in GT5

I've done the Nürburgring on GT5 and in real life, and I have to say, while you might be able to learn your way around the track in the game, GT5 is unable to simulate the feel you get throwing the car into corners, or the rapid change in elevations that the track has. You're not going to feel the bumps, angles, drops or inclines in that game. Not to mention, the ever lingering feeling that you have knowing that if you crash your car, there's no reset button.

The game can only show you so much. To get the true feeling of driving on a race track, you have to do it for real.

If concepts like avoiding full on braking while turning are revolutionary to you, I could see the value. But in general, just no.

Not really anything to compare to... you can cetainly get your launches, apex, entrances and exit rigth via the game but as for learning how to drive the track you need to understand what it feels like when there is tire roll, then how much roll can be applied before the tire breaks loose. there sway and yaw due to excel or deexcel in curves. you need to know th edifference between the two as well they both feel a little different but understanding which is which is critical to being in or out of control. The last thing you want to do is enter a corner too hot and not know how to handle it. Sometimes brakes are not the right answer becasue of how the car grips under power versus braking. for instance if you load up all the weight on your front right tire (turning left) and then brake guess what happens... your left rear becomes light and will loose traction. The idea is to have your vehicle as close to level the entire way around the track. you can change how it behaves by throttle, brakes and combos of both.

now that i have certianly scared you. Do this... for any first time trackee i recommend that you spend an extra couple hundred on an instructor that can take you around the track and give you tips on how to load the car into the corners. Dont worry about others making fun of you, they wont. they know if they do and you drive by them whe they hit the wall at 100 MPH you will be the one laughing.

Last rule. have fun and if your heart is beating out of your chest and your car is safe then you likely hit the limit of the car. Good for you.

I play GT5 extensively using the Logitech G27 wheel, while the physics of the game are pretty amazing, it just does not truly replicate what you feel in real life. Here is my breakdown:

1. There is no steering feedback. Yes the G27 fights back, but its just not that real.

2. The gear shifter is way different from an actual car.

3. I don't get thrown around like I would if I was in a real car.

4. There is no feedback from the pedals.

5. Finally, the most important one. I don't have the fear of crashing or bumping into other cars when I am playing the game.

If you've been putting off going to a track but always wanted to, just go and do it. I put it off for way too long in my life and went for the first time last month. I had a blast! I have plans for a few friends and I to go again next month.

It's tiring, it's all day, but it'll put a smile on your face every time you remember it and drive your car. As far as compared to GT5, it's just not the same. Having the rear slide out from you, actually losing control and spinning, fear of said spin, and by your final run feeling like you're starting to get the hang of it...the real driving simulator just doesn't give that.

I drive Forza with the xBox and have tracked my previous Z3 Coupe and my C6 Corvette. The game can teach you proper braking and the racing line. Two essential factors in quick lap times.

TBH GT5 is less realistic than Forza4. I take my car to the track and drive it on the ring in forza. Forza definitely doesnt compare to track, at the end of the day its just a video game
