My Barber's STI...
Predictions people predictions!!! So my barber has a 2005 Sti, and I have a M3 of course. Only mods i have performance wise is a stg2 MC! The STI has a built motor after some gaskets or something of that nature failed. Were talking about forged heads, block, racing pistons and rods. The whole nine except exhaust, he says with the conservative to tune for daily driving he's putting down about 450/440 whp/tq to the ground? A quarter mile in 11.4 i think and 0-60 3.9. How would stock M's look against this? Personal experience anyone preferably? Or would a fully bolt on M3 with pulley intake n all fair with this StI setup?

Assuming about 20% drivetrain loss, how is he getting an increase of 210whp with no turbo and exhaust upgrades? I'm not sure engine work alone on an '05 STi will do that. But if it does, I guess it would be a good matchup in the 1/4 mile if one really cares.

IF the numbers are correct. it would smoke a M3 and a lot of other cars.
but usually people live on different planets when it comes to how fast they say there cars are. |

It really depends on what kind of stuff he is running. Definitely would have to have an aftermarket upgraded turbo and built motor for those numbers. Subaru engines are notorious for being delicate. An Evo is another story since it has a robust iron block to take boost.
But if his numbers are correct, no way can an M3 keep up.

A built STi will blow the doors off an M3 from a dig...from a roll on the M3 will put up a fight, but the STi will still probably win too. Put a supercharger on the M3 different story...

What did he trap in the 1/4 mile?
He'll most likely work you over. |

Totally different car. Besides both having AWD, turbo and come from rally backgrounds, it's really apples and oranges comparison. The two cars drive totally different. The question is, what did his car actually do?

You would do pretty well against him on a high speed track. You would do especially well against him after more than 1-2 laps on a high speed track
Other than that, he will be faster almost everywhere. This is all assuming everything works perfectly on his car and that is a rare thing with a heavily modified rally car. He will also be working his ass off driving that car at 10/10ths while you will be sipping your Starbucks coffee behind him.

However, if he is running a big turbo setup and putting down the numbers he claims, he'll likely walk you in most situations. My old STI made similar power, and would kick my FBO M3's ass.

I personally wouldn't take that race, especially from a dig. The poster that mentioned getting your doors blown off.....if your barber can halfway launch that car, you will be left in his wake. Having both a mildly modded (FBO + tune) '06 STi (hawkeye, same design as your barber's STi) and an E90 M3 in the garage, I can speak from experience when I say you're going to have your hands full even from a roll, and will most likely lose that one, too. The STi in the garage is making 340awhp/376 lb-ft on 93 octane, 16-18lbs of boost. My buddy has a pretty stock E92 6MT (AA drop in filter only) and we ran 3x from about a 60-70 roll, where the M3 should shine. 2x he walked me (two spectators say he jumped). The 3rd time, when both spectators said we had a clean start, I walked him. We ran to about 140ish, and I was still walking away when we shut down. (From a dig, to me, was a moot point, but he thinks has a chance ). Since it sounds like your boy is all-in, engine-wise, he's going to do more than walk.
Regarding intakes, I haven't seen one that actually has a dyno proven hp increase. The AA filter is good for ~2whp (dyno-proven), though. When I finish w/my exhaust in a couple weeks, I'm going to try and get someone in the STi to see how it fares. Long-term plans for the M3 include a s/c'er, and long-term plans for the STi include a bigger turbo and built engine. Can't wait to see which one'll win *that* race. Not really. Once launched, it's pretty cut and dry. Last edited by whats77inaname; 04-17-2014 at 02:29 PM.. |

Sorry, should have clarified, I meant on a high speed track not a drag strip.

Don't race him from a dig because he will destroy you. From a roll believe it or not a FBO M3 will be right there with it, seen it myself as long as he's on pump. There is no way he's on stock turbo or even pump gas with 450 wheel. I have a very close friend with an 05 Sti built motor on a gt30r turbo and he puts out about 400 wheel on pump and about 480 wheel on c16 leaded....
