BMW Group U.S. Reports May 2011 Sales
  • 01.06.2011

BMW X3 and 5 Series sales lead the way
MINI sets the pace, sales up 46.3% - Year-to-date

Woodcliff Lake, NJ – June 1, 2011… The BMW Group in the U.S. (BMW and MINI combined) reported May sales of 26,452 vehicles, an increase of 19.7 percent from the 22,092 vehicles sold in the same month a year ago.

Year-to-date, BMW Group is up 18.7% on sales of 116,656 in the first five months of 2011 compared to 98,254 in the same period in 2010.

“This month, BMW and MINI sales progress continues in what’s clearly a yo-yo economy as consumer sentiment varies from optimism to pessimism month-to-month,” said Jim O’Donnell, President and CEO, BMW of North America. “We believe it’s having a steady run of new models as we’ve just added the new 6 Series Convertible to the new X3 and 5 Series to further drive BMW sales, and MINI is no different because of the new Countryman as well as higher gas prices increasing small vehicle focus.”

BMW Brand Sales
Sales of BMW brand vehicles increased 15.6% in May for a total of 20,651 compared to 17,859 vehicles sold in May 2010.

Year-to-date, the BMW brand is up 13.0% on sales of 92,068 January through May compared to 81,450 sold in the first five months of 2010.

In May, best performing vehicles included the new BMW X3 SAV. On sale in the U.S. since mid-January, the new X3 has sold 10,337 compared with 2,715 in the same period of 2010, a 280.7% increase. The BMW SAV segment (X3, X5, X6) continues growing with sales for the year-to-date up 43.9% - 25,204 in the first five months of 2011 compared with 17,517 in the same period of 2010. The BMW 5 Series continues its very strong sales growth with May posting an 83.5% increase over May 2010. Year-to-date the 5 Series has sold 20,922 compared to 11,981 in the first five months of 2010, a 74.6% increase.

BMW Pre-Owned Vehicles
In May, sales of BMW used vehicles (including certified pre-owned and pre-owned) totaled 14,773, a decrease of 1.2% from the 14,958 sold in May 2010.

Year-to-date, BMW used vehicle sales are down 2.5% on volume of 68,508 compared to 70,278 in the first five months of 2010.

MINI Brand Sales
MINI USA reported sales of 5,801 automobiles in May. The May 2011 sales are an increase of 37.0% over the 4,233 sold in May 2010.

Year-to-date, MINI sales in the U.S. are up 46.3% on volume of 24,588 compared to 16,804 in the first five months of 2010.

I don't see a whole lot of F10 5 Series here in Montréal but I am starting to see a lot of new X3s. It's a nice little vehicle.

Not too many X3's here in Houston. I do think the car is a winner and will even better when the N20 arrives.

Quite a few F10 5er's in the GTA but not a lot of X3's, just a lot of X5's. With sales like these, why does BMW have the need to expand their lineup with new models that are just rebranded current models?
