NVIDIA Tegra technology in new car models...

While at the Geneva Autosalon... a friend of mine (Lars W.) who works for NVIDIA showed me some of the things their company have been working on. I think the future looks promising for cars and pc's interface.

While we are all BMW fans here... its interesting to see what other car makers are doing. Have a look at what Audi is doing...

NVIDIA Tegra technology: Breakthroughs like the first navigation system based on Google Earth and the first automotive-grade tablet for in-car use. (Audi TT-S see CNET video bellow)

Among other new vehicles in Geneva showcasing NVIDIA in-vehicle technology are the VW Golf GTi; BMW 2-series, 4-series Grande Coupé and i8; Audi S1; MINI Cooper S; Skoda Octavia; Rolls Royce Ghost II and Wraith; as well as Bentley Mulsanne and Flying Spur.

Nice! It is about time displays are going fully digital. I don't know why it has taken so long for this to happen. The information a driver needs should be fully customizable to the driving situation.

Unfortunately it's going to take a LONG time before innovations like this become standard practice.

That is just super nice, makes me look at the idrive in my M3 and say "wtf is this crap" but when I think about everything else it's no big deal. But this in fact is the NBT and of course Audi will take the lead with this technology.

It certainly makes more sense to put information here for the driver BUT what about the Passenger? On road trips my wife likes to find music, connect her iphone and control from the dash. This does not look possible with this setup unless you replicate controls for the passenger. I like a less cluttered and clean look and prefer to have this info off to the side. Actually the safest place is to provide this in a HUD so I do not have to take my eyes off the road.

I'm not sure it will take that long. LCD panels have become so inexpensive, I wonder if they're not coming to a Honda Civic near you. The software development costs are a significant factor though. However, that is changing as well.

In the past, systems like iDrive were built on top of a special class of operating system called RTOS (real-time operating systems). I believe iDrive is built on VxWorks, which is the same OS that powers a lot of network routers and other embedded devices. An RTOS is a niche technology, which means there aren't a large pool of really talented developers to write software for it. Compare this with something like Google's Android platform and Apple's iOS platform, which are a lot more like a desktop computer OS running on a handheld device, and you can see the differences in the software that gets developed for each pretty easily. It's all about the population of developers who are capable of writing software for the platform. The larger the population, the greater the likelihood that talented developers exist and can be hired to do the job.

The rapid growth of the smartphone market has fueled a mind-bogglingly rapid advancement in low power, system-on-a-chip hardware, as well as huge advances in the quality of the software that runs on them. To borrow a phrase from the tea party (only in this case, it's true), a rising tide floats all ships. Inexpensive processors like the nVidia Tegra/Qualcomm Snapdragon, and next generation software platforms like Blackberry QNX, are going to change the way automobile software is developed. Automobile manufacturers will leverage the commoditization of the hardware and software to push these systems in to lower-line automobiles in an effort to draw in millennial buyers, who have shown reluctance to purchase new cars.

Now that's exciting and I am shocked it has taken this long for these sort of cool dashboards to become reality.

exactly.

They can put these android devices in your car, have it run them 100-200 dollars, and charge you thru the nose because it is an "advanced" gps system.

I gotta give a +100 to Audi on this one. I LOVE that dash. Seems very fluid and vibrant. The options seemed awesome. I especially like the fact that it eliminates the second hump or a random flat panel in the middle of the dash for the navi unit. (example: E9X navigation/iDrive) I personally like smooth clean dashes. If BMW can develop something like this that looks this great, Navigation will be an option I select on my next bimmer...

Good point! and even for the passenger entering an address while driving, cetaintly don't want the driver doing that...

I do like the displays on the dash and Audi already has a lot of user control on the drivers display that can be edited (much more useful than BMWs setup). on a car like the TT I see the point of only having it in front of the driver, but on their bigger cars they should have 2 screens.

Not keen on those ones in the place of the standard instrument binnacle. Too much clutter in the driver's eyeline for my liking. From a driver perspective I want basic info right in front of me such as RPM, Speedo and potentially gear selection. All the other multitude of stuff like nav, entertainment etc can go in the center console where either the passenger can access it or I can when I am stationary.

Tesla and MBZ S-Class are way out in front of this!

So I can't hold a phone in car, but mount an iPad in the dash and it's all good. I love the pedestrian detection system. So a buzzer goes off if you are about to plow into a farmers market while you are updating your status. Right hand, meet left hand.

Funny. While this is really "cool" I feel exactly opposite. Unfortunately, I bet I'm the minority.

Keep it analogue. Needles and textured inlays, bevels and the like is art and is wonderful to look at. There is no way to replicate that with a screen and a bunch of pixels. I don't need to use my phone in the car it connects perfectly fine to the systems already present and is useful through the steering wheel. I don't need GPS or a giant LCD screen, or any of the distractions that come along with it. And keep pedestrian detection/external airbags and auto-braking the hell out of my cars, I'm paying attention to the road like I should be and don't need it, or the extra weight it adds.

Personally, a proper real-time operating system like VxWorks is MUCH more reliable than something like Android, and pretty much most other systems out there. You can just reboot your tablet or phone or personal computing device if it starts to get wonky, but that's neither smart or safe to do while you're traveling down the highway at speed, or playing in the mountains.

That type of opsys is used where safety and reliability is required (stuff like satellites, cars, some military equipment, etc.). The last thing you want is something like Windows running your car.
