Origins of the BMW Turbo Engine...

Saw this rare gem at a shop recently...SEE, BMW Motorsport has tons of Turbo heritage to back up the new E8x platform - Boom! Take that. Hahaha.

Love those bucket seats man, Recaro got nothing on this...

Background
The 2002 Turbo was launched at the 1973 Frankfurt Motor Show. BMW's, and Europe's, first turbocharged production car, the 2002 Turbo produced 170 hp (127 kW) at 5,800 rpm, with 240 N·m (180 lb·ft) of torque. The 2002 Turbo used the 2002 tii engine with a KKK turbocharger and a compression ratio of 6.9:1 in order to prevent engine knocking. The 2002 Turbo was introduced just before the 1973 oil crisis, and 1,672 Turbos were built.

Wow...

Saw my first (and only) '02 turbo back at O'fest in 2000. It's an awesome machine.

That car is worth some MAJOR bucks.

the 2002 turbo was the first proper production car with turbo. There were others before it but they were concepts, one offs, or minimal production cars. BMW thus has a large bond with turbocharging and their history.

Well, the second or third, but certainly among the first. I don't know how tight their bond was when they built it it for two years then stopped turbocharging for 40 years...

it is considered to be the first proper production car with fuel injected turbo. I suppose the Corvair Monza was probably the first....but very low production on that.

Actually the Oldsmobile Jetfire J-85 was first, followed by the Corvair about a month or so afterwards.

And BMW's turbo heritage goes back some time before the 2002 Turbo. BMW Motorsport had been successfully campaigning turbo charged cars in various classes of the European Touring Car Championship from the mid 1960's.

IIRC the Olds Jet Fire had water injection to keep the detonation in check too.
