Do some research. Check out user reviews at Amazon.

Canon Powershot A series. G9 is worth a look, too.

If you want to dig in, go to dpreview.com and check out the reviews. Your first decision is whether to get a simple to use small camera, which is best for most people, a good digital SLR or something in between.

If you want to make a quick decision, check out one of the small Canon Powershots on dpreview.com. They are great, small, easy to use, high quality cameras that take good pictures. If you want to make a hobby out of photography, you can move up to a camera that allows more manual control and better pictures. But it's amazing how good the better small cameras are these days.

i bought a little Canon SD850 IS before a recent trip to Europe.

Took very good pictures for a point and shoot and some a pretty decent manual mode. Just over $200

IMO - the 4-500 range puts you right below an SLR, but more than you need to spend on a point and shoot. Not a big fan of the high zoom non SLR type.

I have an SD850 IS - good camera if you just want to put in auto and let it do all the work. Does not have a full set of manual controls though, so it won't let you use aperture or shutter priority modes - the A line has such controls, if you'd prefer. The A-line are generally pretty good, although my one beef is that compared to the older models of the A-line, the newer 2 battery ones take too long to recharge flash.

I also have a Fuji superzoom - some super zooms are so-so, but a lot of them are very capable cameras. My S6000fd lacks a bit of the speed of an SLR, but the picture quality is pretty close. However, it's not a great out of the box, leave it in auto mode type camera, so you just need to determine how much work you want to have to do.
