I've tagged on to this thread rather than starting another one, so hopefully someone will read it
I went in to a reputable tyre dealer last night to get some prices on non-runflats as i want to ditch the Bridgestone's, more because of cost than anything else Anyway, explained to the guy I wanted to replace with the Falken 452's but he went into one (being Spanish), saying that you can't fit non rft's as the car will be all over the place due to the stock suspension set up. So how come all you lot on here that have changed from rft's say that the ride quality is better after you switched ? I'm a bit worried now about going down this route as would be gutted if he was right.... |

Use another tyre fitter!!
A run flat wheel must have an EH2 or EH2+ rim, this is a deeper bead to keep a flat tyres on the wheel. You can fit any tyre to one of these wheels but you can't fit a run flat to a non EH2 or EH2+ rim unless the tyre is designed for the job. I am amazed that someone who has a job fitting tyres, and has teh publics safety in their hands does not know these basics, it happens all the time. BMW offer their parts wheels with non runflats and still you speak to the service desk about putting proper tyres on and they say you can't do it. They are idiots. |

I had the 452s on the Porsche and they are very good, and a real bargain at the price. For those that have moved from RFT on the e9x - have you purchased some sort of space-saver spare wheel?

I see. My e92 appears to have a wheel well (although it has a cubby hole liner in it) but I haven't measured it.
I don't find the 19" RFTs an issue (although I drove a 320d SE with 17" RFTs which was bad) but I might go none RFT when I change simply for a cost issue. a) none RFTs are cheaper and b) are repairable after a puncture without arguing the toss with a pimply Kwick Fit employee.

You can get a space-saver spare wheel as an option on a 5 series (admittedly only seen 19’s so don’t know whether 18’s are available – or indeed if it matters just to get you out of an emergency) and don’t know whether this is a viable option, instead of a mobility kit, compressor, goo, etc. I’ve raised this before on this forum but never had a ‘good’ or ‘bad’ idea response or whether is 'is' or 'isn't' possible.
My car goes in on Monday to have ‘further investigation’ into the suspension before I concede it’s a tyre problem and make a change from non-RFTs. I’ll report back on this issue next week.

Thanks for the re-assurance, I will go somewhere else and will be interested to see what they say..... When i bought the car 2nd hand, the indi dealer had put on replica 162's with non-rft's. I didnt realise at the time until i started getting terrible vibration at 120kmph, they blamed it on the pressures/balancing but after this it was still the same. After I had noticed they were replicas (no number stamped on) ,I told them to fit the OEM ones + tyres from another 320d they had in stock and after this it was fine. So, I have already had ride issues and dont want to go through it all again ! cheers |

Is it only me who does not have a problem with run flats or am I the only one who had a car shipped with the Dunlop ROF tyres?
The downside is that I have had to replace the rears this morning at 12,000 miles but that's why you pay for maintenance |

i have done 34,000kms on the Bridgstones + 14,000 when they were on the other car (see earlier post) The fronts are nearly bald on the outside edge which is annoying as i have been checking regularly with my guage and also used the door sticker values The backs dont look too bad but if I change to the Falkens I will get them done all in one hit. Total cost will be about 600 euros compared with 1100 for the RFT's |

The Michelins are brilliant hence the premium pricing, and will last longer than the cheaper ones

I know you're talking about non-RFTs but I did 23k on my PS2 RFTs when I sold my E90 and they still had several thousand miles of tread left on both front and rears. That 23k included a trip to the Nurburgring

Really?? Every one on the M3 forum who has used them have said they wouldn't bother with them again.
I know the pattern is the same as the PS2 but they have all said they don't have the same feedback. |

It's a nightmare chosing the right tyre, hence the reason for starting this thread in the first place.
I'm tempted to give the Falkens a try even though I usually subscribe to the 'you get what you pay for' philosophy. My reckoning is that you'll not get twice the wear from tyres costing twice as much (or whatever proportion they cost more!!). If you get two-thirds of the wear before needing to replace then it's money well saved. Obviously changing away from the RFT's is famed to improve the handling/comfort/etc however at least if you bottle it and go back to RFT's then you've not spent so much of your hard earned cash. Note: I don't know why you'd want to change back but it's one of the things bubbling around in my head!!! I've heard that 'Vredestein Ultrac Sessantas' are good 'budget' tyres too. Would be interested to hear what you went for in the end and the review...
