Can BMW upgrade X1 halogen headlamps to Xenon?

Hi everyone,

I recently leased a 2014 X1 sDrive28i. I got an amazing lease deal on the base model, ($3,500 down, $199/month) so I opted to try the car out for three years. The only thing that I'm unhappy with is not having the Xenon headlamps. I think at the end of my three year lease I may only wish to purchase the car if they can swap out the halogen lights that I have for OEM BMW Xenon. Is this something that BMW could/would do for me? I may use that as the key to my negotiation in saying I would purchase if they can do the swap. Let me know what you think!

Thanks,

Matt

Garage List
A quick search for "Xenon" shows several threads with information on a Xenon upgrade.

I have never heard any dealers would replace an OEM halo with Xenon on a car that has already been optioned and sitting in the lot. You could only consider the aftermarket.

I'll take a guess and say, "NO, they won't do it."

I had the same dilemma last year, and I looked into almost every possibility. Eventually, I called up my trusty dealer in Orange County (that I really do like, unlike the sleazy one near my house), and basically got a response of N.O.

What they *really* said was that they could technically do the swap, but they'd have to void not only the headlamp assembly warranty but also my entire electrical system warranty or anything the wires are connected to, on top of a parts and labor cost of over $3,000. By and large, it wasn't nearly worth the hassle or risk so I kind of gave up.

At a bare minimum, it's going to be mighty expensive. I celebrated the first month of X1 ownership by hitting a deer, and one Xenon had to be replaced for more than $1k.

I'm pretty sure that there's more to it than just the electrical issues. Xenon headlights also have a connection to the front suspension to provide self-leveling function. Not sure if this will be in place if your car came from the factory with halogen lights.
