David, imagine your keeper rate three times better, no matter which lens and TC you use. That's what the 1D X will give you. For me, it's a "must have" just working on the cash right now.

My eagle shots once again necessitated 100% crops. That was with a 1.4x TC on the 400mm f5.6. The 6D autofocused at F8 to yield a less than 30% keeper rate. Next time I go eagle shooting, I think I bring along the 5D MkIII from school, just to see how much better the AF is. But what I was really wanting was a 1Dx/500mm f4 IS/2x TC III setup. Alas, my lottery winnings have yet to materialize.

Same boat here. I am getting furloughed tomorrow, but I am going to Reno on Thursday to see if I can win my retirement

And of course the day before I am out of work I see that B&H has a used 500 f4/L/IS I for 6,400 bucks. If I knew I had a paycheck coming, I would have jumped on that.

Good discussion, thanks for posting. The more motorsports shooting I do, the more it'll become an itch to upgrade.

Maybe I will rent the 1DX and the 100-400 w/ 1.4x TC for the last race of the season in December.

Heres a fun shot from the pits, something you don't see everyday:

I've used the 5D MkIII for shooting indoor events and it's decent, but even with the much bally-hooed AF, I've missed focus on things right in front of me. And my copy at least has seriously erratic AWB. I've been shooting in continuous mode and had a quick series of pics show wildly different WB. WB is correctable, of course, but it does make me wonder whether I got a flawed body. Sadly, with the school owning the camera, exchanges are out of the question.

Shoot in Raw and you'll never worry about WB.

Generally, that discussion is consistent with my experience; however, I'd put the 1D X way out in front of the 5D MkIII, mainly due to its ability to manhandle super-telephotos with 2x TCs attached. The 5D MkIII is workable in these situations, but a distant second.

The 7D is outdated. When it was new, it blew away the 5D MkII, but that was 2009. Lots has changed. I sure hope that the 7D MkII gets the 5D3's AF system and the 70D's sensor. It'll be killer once again.

You're always safe then. Don't worry about things that don't matter.

All around the leaves against the sky. Look especially in the upper left and right corners. In the left corner the branches are purple. In the right the leaves show fringing. Very common when you have leaves against a bright sky. The Defringe slider should knock it right out.

Another one I liked how it turned out. This one is 400mm with AF. I went a little further on the editing than usual

Dave you got me inspired - renting a 1DX for 4 days is only $238 at LensRentals.... tempting!

The keeper rate and the quick AF lock in with the TCs will blow you away. Remember f/8 is the limit for AF, even with the 1D X. I have read of people getting slow AF with some of the Kenko TCs, but I haven't tried it.
