Well this guy was looking at the Nikon 1 J3 which I believe is inferior to the EOS M. No need to compare to a DSLR, was just wondering if the autofocus was noticeably unbearable, or if the review this guy found was testing in some dark conditions to purposefully thwart the AF capabilities.

I've found the AF to be pretty good depending on your point of focus. The focus "point" is actually a box and will only get so small. So if you're shooting with the 22mm and you try to focus on something much smaller than the box, you might not get it to focus precisely where you want.

The slowness that gets me about the EOS-M is the time it takes to grab the next shot. Once it takes a shot, you wait a second or to for the screen to return and then another for the focus and then it shoots. So time between shots is 2-3 seconds unless you're shooting continuous. And then, of course, you can't recompose between shots.

The EOS-M is best for posed shots or shots where you have time to wait between captures. In a fluid situation you could try the continuous focus mode *if* you keep your eye on your target. Then you could grab pics a little faster as it wouldn't (in theory) need to keep refocusing.

Fuggedaboutit!

Ok, it's not that bad. The noise level is on par with a 7D, I'd say. I haven't done much low, low light focusing, so I can't answer that. I'll try some this weekend, though.

Yeah not expecting full frame 6D or 5DIII low light goodness, but more comparing to say a Rebel.

The EOS M goes to ISO 12,800 so I figured it can't be that bad, and it uses the same sensor as the Rebels.

Yeah that little full frame sony looks pretty awesome. I've been really happy with the nex-5r I picked up a couple months ago, my first experience with sony cameras.

I'm getting the hang of manual focusing the Roki 300. Like going back old school only without the split donut for help.

Taking a trip soon, so I was looking for a portable tripod.

Ended up buying the Slik Sprint Pro II. Anybody have some experience with this one?
Seems pretty good.

I ran a completely unscientific test today comparing the Canon 1.4x TC III to the Kenko C-AF 1.4x Teleplus Pro 300 DGX. Both shot using a Canon 400mm f5.6 for 560mm on a 5D MkIII, center focus, f8, ISO 400, 1/640 sec. Auto-focused, of course. I took numerous shots with each and chose the best of the groups. I don't think there's much question which is better.

Canon

Kenko

The Kenko does allow f8 AF on the 6D and works with any lens. The Canon will not allow f8 AF on the 6D and will only work with certain lenses. So there's the trade-off. Looks like I'll need to pick up a Canon 1.4x TC III for birding, though.

There's a $50 rebate on them right now. I've had the mkII for a long time, but picked up the MkIII from local shop last Friday so my buddy could also shoot with a TC. It worked really well on the 5D3 with both the 400 5.6 and the 100-400.

I wouldn't use the 2d one. Color and contrast is even better with the 500mm.

The Canon refurb site had them for $349 before tax this morning. In stock. I should have grabbed one then. But until I have an f8 AF camera, it's really not much use to me. But one is definitely in my future.

Those are 100% crops. The Kenko is ok as long as you aren't doing such huge crops. But it seems as long as I'm a poor FL challenged slob, I'll need to be doing big crops. I need all the sharpness I can get.

For what it's worth, Canon Rumors is reporting that the 7D2 is definitely due the 1st half of 2014. If it gets what they are saying it's going to, there is 1.6 extra right there coupled with the latest AF, sensor, etc. I don't recall if they said anything about f8 though.

Yeah, I've decided to hold off buying another body until it comes out. Nice AF and a better sensor and maybe 10fps would be nice, but if Canon doesn't give it f8 AF, they'll have dropped the ball. We'll see.

So close, yet so far away.
UPS shows my new Panasonic LX-7 from B&H 20 miles away. It should take some nice shots.

I had one. I found it very difficult to focus. Not at all like their 35mm, which is fairly easy. The focus ring on mine was tight and had a short throw, so it wasn't easy to bounce back and forth to choose a sharp focus. If you do hit the focus right, it's sharp as a tack.

I ordered one last night, i need a good portrait lens and the fuji 56 1.2 has yet to announce a date. For 250€ the roki looks like the best, at least short term, solution. Hopefully the focus peaking on the fuji will help with the focus issue.

I've got some camera gear for sale, thinking about upgrading what I've got or switching to a different platform.

Focus Peaking should definitely help. Especially with the razor thin DoF that 85 1.4 gives.
