Well, I saved $500 over the 35mm f/1.4L. I think the one I bought will be more versatile. I don't shoot a ton of portraits like you.

Where'd you get that? I was looking at one for $1075 and in the space of a page refresh it jumped to $1095.

It was for that price for a period of 5 minutes. Fortunately, it didn't go up while I was contemplating purchasing it. I guess we'll see tomorrow morning if it was a price-mistake and whether it'll ship or not.

I find it faster to use the zooming ring than walk several steps back and forth and miss a potential shot.

Now, if I had the Leica M9, then it would be a completely different story...

I agree Trevor... it's like owners with dSLRs... many shoot with them in A-mode. What's the point? You could probably get a point-and-shoot that does as good as a job (at least for their discerning eyes).

the m9 is not that good. they need to take some tips from fuji.
I decided to not buy the fuji either. hopefully they fix its shortcomings for the next one.

Dude, the X100 is ass compared to the M9. First of all, I don't even think it's a fair comparison (one has interchangeable lenses, the other doesn't). I played around with the X100, and it's too damn complicated.

Leica has a huge advantage when it comes to the simplicity factor. Yeah, it doesn't have AF, but after playing with an M9 for only a few minutes, I was able to focus pretty quickly with it. It's also missing a lot of the bells & whistles that the X100 has, but what it does, it does very well.

Btw, I liked how you edited "the m9 is shit" to "the m9 is not that good".
I will agree with you that 90% is the photographer, the rest is gear.

Good luck with the 24-105, a very good lens.
Probably the price drop is because the 24-105II F2.8 IS will be $1099 it should arrive next week.
Also come with a free B&W Cir.pol, ND and UV filters
or not ;-)
Dammed good lens anyway.Excellent price, hopefully you won't get the up-sell call.

but the m9 is worthless at even moderately high iso. i just think, that for a $6,000 camera, it should be a hell of a lot better than it is. hopefully they're working on a replacement. not that i'd have the $ to buy one anyway.

i was really hoping to get the X100, but oh well. next gen...

Haha... kinda like the 24-70mm f/2.8L IS II?

That I agree with you. Hell, they could've at the very least included a scratch-resistant sapphire LCD display on the M9 for $7k. The high-ISO performance is lacking, but you are able to focus well in nearly no light, which you wouldn't be able to do on any dSLR.

They are releasing a new Leica M9-P camera later today, but from what I hear there are only cosmetic adjustments and a new LCD display for even more $$$.

I think Kevin meant it as a joke... I'm sure the MK II of this lens will come with the 5D3, which isn't being announced or released any time soon.

Mark, I was just playing with a friends Canon XS the other day that had a decent piece of glass on it (one of my old pieces), the pictures that were coming out of the camera were pretty stunning considering the lack of abilities of the body. But as it can still adjust all the important stuff that we might use, it worked well and managed some nice shots.

You'd be surprised how far a piece of glass will take a camera body.

that being said, if you hate your camera body, you are less likely to shoot as regularly. so it comes down to choice. And since you shot with the 70-200, you should be able to see the quality you can still pull from that camera with other good pieces of glass attached to it.

just food for thought.

Ah. Had me going. I was thinking that the 24-105mm F4L IS isn't showing up for purchase on the Canon Store website and maybe that had to do with....

Never mind, I'm a dope.

You're right, I know. Every time I think about the 60D, I try to come up with things I don't like about my T1i. Aside from the AF, there isn't much to complain about. I'd be switching only for the hopefully improved AF and the swivel screen. Probably not justified to forego good glass for that.

...
Yeah, that's right.

Low light, high speeds, high magnification, fast AF, accurate AF, etc. are where the higher end bodies separate themselves. With good glass, a tripod and good technique, you can produce great scenics and portraits with almost any body appropriate for the lens. Shooting the same shot with the 5D MkII will look pretty much the same with competent processing, UNTIL you look at a 100% blow up, then you'll fall out of your chair over the differences. At internet sizes, much of the discussion is purely theoretical, but start blowing up prints to hang on the wall and then the differences start to show.

Dave

the 60D is a great camera, and to have the rotating dial for aperture and separate dial for shutter is a nice thing to have that the T1i doesn't have. it's also slightly larger, so weight distributes a little better, and it shoots faster :P and of course the AF is an improvement, but i never had issues focusing mine when i had the T1i.

all great reasons to consider it. However, a piece of glass can make any camera a pro camera.

My buddy who has the 60D shot with an XS for a long time too, and he has some pretty incredible shots. One of which he has blown up to about the size of a 40" tv sitting on his wall. The colours are perfect, and there's no grain or anything.

Dave
and even then, you have to start blowing them up pretty big to see the differences

considering the 5DmkII picture will cover a good portion of a wall

the one thing that really surprised me was dave convincing me to do a side by side comparison of the 5DmkII and the 7D, and to find that i was getting a sharper image with the 7D at 100% crop. The final image basically appeared as though i hadn't actually zoomed in to 100% where i could easily tell i was as zoomed as i could go with the 5DmkII

Well, the camera store called me... they didn't do a bait & switch, rather said it was a price mistake and they can't honor it. They said the best they can do is $999 + S&H, which I respectfully declined. So, they cancelled my order. Oh well... my search continues...

Well that sux, but it happens. Still, $999 isn't a bad price, either.

yeah... but when a refurb from Canon Direct is $80-100 less than that, it makes you think twice.

I'm always tempted to go with a refurb, but then you add in tax and shipping and the refurb is suddenly not that much less than new. Plus I always have Amazon gift certs hanging around which can knock another $50-100 off, so then refurbs never beat the new price.

Hint: Amazon.com credit cards are good for stuff like this. Nice getting gift certs every month.
