It's very very easy. It's in the icons on the left of the map. The name of the icon is called "Route". It's documented in the manual.

I think just allowing google maps on the new NAV software version (for those with a Combox) is the simplest solution. It would work 99% of the time and just having a built-in Google maps CACHING mode enabled (like in Google Earth does) solves the issue when you have a poor connection. You could even precache your entire route from your home via WiFi (which would cover a slightly larger area in case you divert course a bit).

Audi seems to be going in a direction like this and its the easiest solution to implement.
