I've never had one but heard they are a great starter.
They have a good flight time as well.

Whatcha wanna use it for? Just fun?

I skipped the phantoms because I knew I would want more and I know how to solder. I knew id want to upgrade things and build it how I wanted to. You learn a lot about how it works so you know how fix fix things as well.

Exactly, just for fun! I might want to make some rolling vids on some streets around here. Just want one to mess with quite honestly so nothing too fancy although an MQ-9 or X-47B would be sweet.

I have one of these too. I should put a shoulder stabilizer on mine as well. I'm sure it makes it easier to grab smaller things.

Damn you people and this awesome thread.

I've refused to look in this thread for so long, but couldn't hold back anymore!

I've been wanting one of these for a while, but my desire is to fly a DSLR for aerial photography.

Might need to pick up a used rig one of these days just to learn how to fly; however the end game would be an octocopter since DSLRs are heavy with a lens and corresponding gimbal.

Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy have both now received emails with a link to this thread.

Damn it!

Carrying a dslr will require a serious setup. Most people go with a mirror less camera as an alternative but if you've got the money (3k+)for a big boy heli go for it.

I'd start out with a cheapy quad like a hubsan. Something under $100.

Yep. I made the mistake of researching it a tiny bit.

< $100 sounds good for learning to fly, and the inevitable crash landings that will come along with it!

It's a good start. If you are careful you won't crash as much as you think.
I've bashed my trainer around but have yet to crash my big bird. Almost lost it once though, flew away on it's own one time

Interesting. That's actually one of my concerns, or at least somewhat similar; having never flown yet - flying out of range and losing ability to control/fly back.

Most systems have a failsafe, return to home. It doesn't always work. GPS can be affected by solar radiation etc. I had one time where it didn't work and it flew off. Pretty sure it was due to all the wifi networks that were around me (College Campus). I hit the return to home and it took off in another direction. I looked forever for it thinking it flew into traffic. It actually landed itself not too far from where I was. The failsafe worked, it just didn't return to where it took off. It didn't register the take off point until it was already in the air far away.

I never want to fly out far enough to worry but I've got an OSD, on screen display that overlays my video. Basically shows all the vitals, battery consumption, signal strength (rssi), direction to home etc. You can see when you start to get out too far.

If you plan to fly somewhat far with FPV video, just go ahead and plan on a UHF system for control over the 2.4g crap. I mainly did it so the video transmitter frequency wouldn't bother my control frequency, ~433mhz vs 1.3ghz.
I use the EZUHF, which ties in easily to the EzOSD system. Kinda overkill for what I use it for (It's never really out of my sight) but better safe than sorry. I plan to get a long range plane (a lot cheaper in case of a crash) to go out further for longer cruising flights and fun. My hex is mainly for recording smooth video so it hovers around pretty slow most of the time.
