Turbo Issues

Hey,

Me and my friend both purchased are 335i coupes/cabs months apart. similarly both our cars seemed to run without any major problems. It will be 3 years we owned the cars by the summer. Upon starting my car i noticed a rustling sound in my exhaust when my engine was cold. I asked someone at the dealership and they told me it was because the car only emits exhaust out of one pipe when it is cold to speed up the heating process and then after, once warm both exhaust begin to work.

My friend started to have the same problem so he took it in and they replaced a bolt in his exhaust. The sound persisted so he took it in again and under further consideration they are now replacing both his turbos. I would take my car in to figure out if it has the same problem but im out of the country for another few months. I wanted to know if anyone else's turbos have been replaced and what impact this would have on your decision to keep your car. I wanted to keep my car since my mileage is really low but if my turbos are already need to be replaced is it really worth it? is this a frequent problem? we both purchased our cars in 07

Buy a BMW extended warranty if you want to keep the car.

Ironically I just ran into the exact same problem. I was getting long cracks which made me thing it was the HPFP, then before I can take it to the dealer I was receiving weird noises from the exhaust sytem like it was dying on me.

Not the typical sign of a HPFP so when i took it in, they said they needed to replace both my turbos as well. I was quite shocked with the replacement but i guess better sooner than later.

I also have a 2007 model. Hope it doesn't happen again b/c that will def. be costly.

How much to replace both turbos? Looks like the 335i is not exempt from the problems facing the B5 S4

I had the same noise and it ended up being the exhaust silencer rattling around. I'd like to know why his turbos needed to be replaced though.

Someone at my gym said $6700 so it sounds like the figures are correct. Imagine needing that after 3 years? Again I wasn't paying much attention to the car trouble threads until my car shut off twice on its own while I was driving.

Well just this morning I noticed on coldstartup the fumes only coming out of one pipe for about a minute, then the other kicked in.
Anyhow I've been having long cranks on morning startup and made an appointment with bmw this coming tuesday. I described the coldstartup problem to the advisor and he mentioned most likely the HPFP and they do have redesigned ones available. So we'll see what happens tuesday.
