bmwusa says : "Hairs" on your neck

Sorry if I am posting in the wrong place.. For this kinda topic I didnt know where to post other than the general.

I looked at bmwusa.com and found this sentence:

"Let the hairs on your neck rise again"

I thought hair was plural.. Havent heard something like "I have hairs"

Sucks!!!

Correct me if I am wrong.. somebody please

I'm assuming neither of you are native English speakers? "Hairs" is correct when referring to the plural of individual... well, hairs.

The wonderful English language.

"My hair is messy." Hair referring to all of my hair, as in one entity.

"I have 3 hairs that just wont sit right." Hairs being plural for hair.

As per what i know hair is singular and is used as a plural.

Its unreal to see how many of bmw fans would back up bmwusa even if it screws up.

It really goes either way depending. As said, it depends on if you're refering to individual hairs, or all of your hair in general, or in this case, each individual hair on the back of your neck, or all of your hair on the back of your neck.

However, I will give you that no one ever says "It made the hairs on the back of my neck stand up". It's always "It made the hair on the back of my neck stand up". However, upon further inspection, it COULD go either way.

Being a native english speaker, I will admit that the english language is pretty complex because it doesn't follow rules as strictly as other languages I have been exposed to. This is a perfect example, alot of it depends on the context and situation the word is used in.

The floor was covered with dog hairs. There's your sentence, have a nice day. The word hair can refer to both the mass of strands that grow on skin (like the hair on your head) or a single strand. If someone is using the word hair in the context of a single strand, the plural hairs would be the correct way refer to more then one of them.
