Please help! 335i or 328i?

Ok guys, I'm currently hunting for my first Beamer! My friend has a 335i (n54) which I've driven a few short times but ridden in plenty. I really like the 3-series coupe, and both cars are in my price range. I need you guys opinion on this, I'm more of a naturally aspirated guy, but not totally opposed to a turbo. What kind of horsepower numbers can I get out of a 328i without forced induction? I'd ideally like to make around 350-400 at some point, am I being to radical? Please list any places i can price and buy parts at, and are there any itb kits for the 328i? I'm plenty knowledgeable with engine technology but not specifically BMW, so any help is very much welcomed! Thanks!

pretty sure you can not do anything like that to the 328. your best bet is putting the m3 engine in it and you will get somewhere close to those numbers

You'll never get 300 hp out of a 328, let alone 350-400 hp. Not without nitrous. 335 already comes with 300+hp and can be tuned for 375+ with just a software upgrade.

You won't regret the 335.

even if the above were true, thats crank power which would possibly result in maybeeeeeee putting down 230 to the wheels max

on the other hand, like another poster mentioned, tune only 335's put down mid 300 hp and mid to upper 300 tq to the wheels.

for power, no question, 335 is vastly superior.

Wow, thanks guys. This is my first post and not even an hour after I posted it I have great responses. Thats kinda what I was expecting to hear. I'm probably gonna get a 335i, but I was just checking with the pros here. Any other words of wisdom on engines?

The 335i depreciates significantly less than the 328i based on actual market conditions to the point where they actually cost very nearly the same to own after 3 years once you count the extra options the 335i comes with.

As others have said if you think you're getting anywhere around 350 hp out of a 328i on the cheap you're crazy. I can pretty much guarantee that to get a 328i to that much power will cost $10,000+ on the other hand you can easily get 460+ hp with a few bolt ons from a 335i.

If you care about going NA buy an M3, the 335i will still beat one in a straight line but it's close enough that it makes plenty of sense even if it's slightly slower. The thing is though the 335i has almost no trubo lag so the NA discussion is just plain crazy, it's just a label that you can feel good about, nothing more.

The break down looks like this:

3 year depretiation + mods:

- 328i - NA

Depretiation: $17,000
Mods: $13,000 (rough estimate)
HP: 350

Total: $30,000

- 335i - Turbo

Depretiation: $17,000
Mods: $2000
HP: 460

Total: $19,000

- M3 - NA

Depretiation: $20,000
Mods: $2000
HP: 440

Total: $22,000

If you genuinely need to achieve 350+ HP, you'll have to get a 335. Not sure what your objectives are as go the car's use, but the 328, and the HP it comes with or that it's boosted to via a tune is more than enough for daily driving.

It's not clear from your post whether you have a goal regarding HP achievement or whether you are using HP as a proxy that, in your mind at least, will allow you to reach some specific performance goal(s). Perhaps you can clarify your intent? You may then receive advice tailored to your goal rather than to a tactic that may or may not be the best way to reach that goal. It's not often that one seeks HP just for the sake of reaching a power output in and of itself, although there are engineers and researchers who do exactly that for the benefit of the academic pursuit and the learning that comes from having done it.

Did you mean to say the 335 depreciates more? If the 335 is ~$5k more at purchase, but then the same after 3 years it means the 335 lost more value over that same time. ...unless I am missing something.

There used to be a site with BMWFS depreciation values, can't find it now.

Edit - found some, the 335i depreciates slightly more, as I would expect. These are a few years old, but I would think the relative values should be similar today.

Dude, blow your buddy away and buy a CPO'ed E92 M3, great values out there and meets all of your goals!

If you're not going to get a 335i, I'd get an e46 330ci with performance package. With e92 you sacrifice looks for power in a 335i, but if you're not getting the power and going with a 328i, an almost equally as powerful e46 330ci coupe with performance package is much nicer than a 328i e92. Newer isn't better, most who know and have owned each series, would prefer e46 if the power numbers are similar. Take an excellent condition 330ci with performance, line it up next to a 328i coupe, and 8/10 people will say the e46 is sexier. Plus, it handles better and is much more fun to drive.

Being a previous owner of a 335i, i would steer away simply due to HPFP failures and turbo related issues, especially being out of the factory warranty. IMO, 328i is also very fun to drive, although it doesn't have the power of a 335i. Before making the purchase, do some research about the reliability factors between the two, then decide which of the two is more practical for you. Good luck.

I assume your in for MT.

Think of the 335 as a modded 328i and its more delicate, as are mosted heavy modded cars.

I was in the same boat and decided on the 328i coupe and not a moment of regret. Im not trying to keep up with a buddy's faster car or other peer pressures.

Years ago I got a new Mercedes E430 which was about 9 grand more than the E320. Same car, same dynamics. The 8cyl never was the issue like the 335 motor is with fuel pump and other problems. What I found was the car burst of speed was really only for recreation purpose and if it was not there I'd really be cool with it. That was my conclusion and deducted that if I take my head out of the specs and just drive the 328 is plenty quickk enough and handles just the same (slightly better with weight loss??) and not have the worry of long term ownership with the turbo.

Thats my take. 335 guys love their cars and it validates them when others follow suit. 328i owners maybe just as guilty. So yeah, I love my car and enjoy it even without its world class 0-60. If you have the need for speed then go 335 and enjoy the guilty pleasure!

335i. The 328i is a great car, but if your looking to reach those numbers take the safer/ easier route and save yourself the headache.

335i, simply because of the kind of power upgrades you are looking for. By the way, BMW cars are referred to as 'Bimmers' - 'Beamers' are the BMW motorbikes....

335 for fun

328 and 335 both nice cars. I'm bias towards the 335.

BMWFS values have little or no connection with reality. I've had several sales people agree that this is the case when I asked them about it.

I actually went shopping for a 328i and 335i and bought a 335i, I spent 3 months looking for my car where I saw thousands of ads. The real world price difference I saw with options was nearly identical to the invoice difference of the original purchase price between a 328i and 335i when adjusted for the additional features you get in the 335i.
