Installed! Quaife LSD for 130i
Hey all,
Had a Quaife LSD installed today by ALS Performance in Rydalmere. Andrew (the owner) was friendly, professional, knowledgeable and happy to chat about the car and other mechanical modifications for BMWs- I highly recommended ALS for anyone contemplating an LSD install or other mechanical work for BMWs. As for the LSD, haven't had much of a chance to test it out (only on the drive home today), but noticed a definite increase in traction (esp. pulling out of junctions), hardly any intervention in DTC mode, and newfound levels of predictability/controllability with DSC off. Will have a chance to fully test it towards the end of May, when I have another skidpan day at Eastern Creek. Will report back with pics and vids

Sourced the diff from HP Autowerkes (US) for $1460, installation was approximately $400. Taking advantage of the exchange rate

Not sure exactly, but i'd say around 4hrs? Was your labour much more expensive?

I've been told the bolted LSD takes around 6-7 hours to install so I would think at least 8-10 hours for one of our local workshops to do it. The average labour rate here is around $100 per hour though, hence why I asked because $400 is very reasonable.

Was thinking of doing their drift school course, but couldn't justify it being the same price for half the time (5-9pm). Also, I'd rather drive in daylight than at night

Awesome, see you there minijet!
Do you have the Quaife as well? If not, is it easy to hold the 135i in a constant radius power oversteer with the e-LSD? Although I've never tried, I think it would be pretty difficult in the 130i with an open diff, hence my purchase of the Quaife before the skidpan day :P

No particular reason- Quaife just seemed like good value, reputable, reliable and a popular choice

You're right, Quaife has been around a lot longer and are reputable. I'm having a tough time deciding. The only difference is the Wavetrac has the additional friction plate to aid traction when one wheel is unloaded or in low traction conditions such as dirt, snow or ice. Not sure if I need that feature though.

Isn't this what all LSDs do Vinney? How is the Wavetrac different?

If you're willing to wait until the end of May, I'll have videos (both outside and in-car) showing what the Quaife is capable of on the skidpan

Yeah mate I've got a few prices, not a great deal of discounting to buy 1 but there are discounts if we purchase multiple LSD's. Shipping is around $150 for 1 bolted.

wouldnt it be more worthwhile to spend the extra $150 then? also this thread is causing me to seriously consider spending the money i had set aside for tires for when my new wheels arrive...

Clutch-pack LSD's will do this, but the Quaife is a helical (torque-biasing) diff which transfers power as long as there is any amount of grip on the slipping wheel. If one wheel is completely in the air however, it won't be able to transfer any torque to the wheel on the ground.
