Alarm Acoustic Signal

New member, long time Audi owner, decided to give BMW a chance (not impressed yet, sorry).

My question is related to the alarm. I would like to hear an acoustic signal during unlocking/locking. I looked in the menu (per owner's manual) and the only options I see are the hazard warning flashers and the Off function. No other choices - what am I doing wrong?

Thank you.

I dont know why you don't have an audible signal,...take it to dealer but it definitely should chirp once for open and twice for close. The lights and hazards also flash when these happen. It is the BMW alarm right?

I think if you don't have the anti-theft alarm option, your car won't make chirping sound. Btw, drive your car more often and let the love grow in you my friend! . Trust me, audi < BMW in driving pleasures.

Interesting - maybe there is no alarm. I thought it was standard on most cars. Is there a place/label on the car where I can see all the factory installed options?

I guess probably just the chirping sound will indicate that you have the alarm option. Other than that I'm not really sure. Maybe someone can chip in here.

You can look on the build sheet to see if it is installed. Alternatively, when you lock the car the clown nose underneath the rearview mirror would blink if the alarm is installed. Personally, I think the alarm is worthless and have opted not to get it in either of our vehicles. If somebody is going to break into the car, they will break into the car. I would know since I live in the car theft capital of California.

Well the "clown nose" doesn't blink - I'm shocked there's no alarm. Live and learn I guess...Thank you all for the valuable input.

My car's build sheet didn't list an alarm, but a few days after I purchased it I learned that it actually does have the alarm. Apparently it is the dealer installed one so it would not show up on the build sheet. From my research it looks like the dealer installed one only includes tilt and hood/door sensors, but not interior movement sensors that would be included with the factory install.

One other indicator of whether you have an alarm is if you press and hold the trunk button on your remote it will trip the alarm siren. A bit cleaner way to trip the alarm siren rather than actually trying to break in.

Yeah my car doesn't have alarm and it doesn't chirp during lock/unlock. I wish it did though.

For lock/unlock audible signal, you do need the alarm.

Interesting, I've always wondered if there were people who actually liked/wanted the chirping sound... the first thing I did when picking up my car was disable it (literally the first thing, on the bmw welt foor before ever driving it, lol)

Well, I often do it as I am walking away from the car. I don't want to have to look back to have confirmation that the doors have been locked. That, and cool guys don't look back

But it's hard not to look back and admire my car as I lock it and walk away, alarm chirp or not. Maybe that compulsion will wear off with time.

You need to have the factory-installed "Anti-Theft Alarm" option added to the car in order to get the *chirp-chirp* sound when you lock/unlock the car. Now, why isn't there an alarm standard? you may ask, but note that BMWs have an exceptionally advanced locking system, which is theft-detterent in itself. BMWs are pretty hard to jimmy unlock and steal.

I mainly got the alarm for level-sensor. So if anyone is gonna try to steal my wheels it'll go off. Aftermarket alarms with such option cost from 300 to 500 bucks, I paid 200 for stock alarm and installed it myself (30 minutes).

our cars are prewired for the alarm. it's pretty easy to do and you then need to get it coded.

They used to be prewired... around 3/2009 they stopped pre-wiring the alarm

Maybe I'll just do that - install the alarm myself. Is there any software/cable that allows me to code it myself?

Coding wasn’t required when I retrofitted mine except there is no chirp and no option to turn it on. Not sure if coding will add that.

That means it isn't working
If the chirp isn't working the car doesn't "know" that the siren is there. You might get blinking lights if it goes off but I doubt it's gonna go off at all.

Had a friend sit in the car and armed it. Waited 10-15 seconds and he tried to open the door from the inside and the alarm went off... *edit - Blinking lights and siren.

That said, I haven't tested the tilt and breaking glass sensors.

If you're not hearing an chirp when locking/unlocking, then either:

A.) Your car didn't come with an alarm system

B.) The acoustics are turned off. Go into your iDrive settings(assuming you have iDrive) and change it.
