Buying an M5 need help

Hi All you fivers!

I am coming out of my E90 M3 and looking to get into an M5, hopefully some of you guys can give me some pointers specs wise etc.

Looking to buy a nearly new used model 09 pretty soon, or should I wait until the new M5 is released as I am guessing there may be some good deals to be had?

Thanks for taking the time.

Marcus

It's pointless in my opinion to wait for the new M5 to come out in order to get a better deal on an older one. It's going to take a least a year before the new M5 is available so you'll have to wait a year to get into a used M5 when you obviously want one now. Go for it.

I think he means waiting until the new one is out to further drive down prices of the e60.

Hi Guys

Thanks for your replies. Yes I would be looking to get one very soon. Never having had an M5 before I just wondered what were the 'must have' specs on this model of car but I am guessing it's similar to my M3 now.

Thanks anyway

Active seats are very cool. Def pass on the SMG tranny, which is terrible. I think the HUD is very cool, other than that I'm not sure of any other exclusive options to the M5, but the V10 is standard, and that is a GOOD thing.

I believe Top Gear Jeremy Clarkson didn't like the manual to his surprise. I think he said the manual was not specifically made for the M5 and it was just not a good fit. Felt like it was an after thought where as the SMG version was designed for the M5.

I considered an m5 before I got my m3. The SMG was brutally uncomfortable. So take your pick of lesser evils. The SMG will make your passengers think you are a terrible driver.

Manual tranny is not available in m5's outside of NA.

Numerous reports on the manuals dull and squishy feel. Then there are phone book size reports on the SMG's ability to send you to a chiropractor.

Of the two OP I would look for a 6 speed. All in all you can get a sweet deal on them if you are patient.

M5board or 6speed BMW section may be a better place for now.

Having driven an SMG and a manual M6, I would take the SMGIII over the manual everytime. The SMGIII has 7 gears and was designed around the engine. The manual was an afterthought for the NA market who believes driving a manual gives an extra badge of skill. The SMGIII is a sequential gearbox and wide open at S6 DSC OFF--there is nothing like it. It's awesome!

I'm looking at an M5 as well, but I'm having a hard time finding a manual at all... Apparently they didn't make many. Good luck though, you will love the car either way!
