BMW Manufacturing in Spartanburg South Carolina, site of BMW X3, BMW X5 and BMW X6 production has made the US EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) Top 20 List of On-Site Generation.

The companies on this list participate in Green Power purchases which reduce the environmental impact of electricity use.

BMW users an on-site landfill gas energy system, which in 2010 supplied 37 percent of the company's overall electricity use or roughly 62 million kilowatt-hours of power. Gas is directed from a landfill to the manufacturing facility to power its four gas turbines, which generate approximately 4.3 MW of electricity for the factory while also supplying water for cooling and hot water needs.

The EPA's list is updated quarterly, but BMW manufacturing place on the list is solid, here are the top 10 companies on the list (ordered by total kilowatt-hours of power)

1. Kimberly-Clark Corporation: 7% of total electricity use
2. City of San Diego, CA: 27% of total electricity use
3. U.S. Air Force: 1% of total electricity use
4. BMW Manufacturing Co. / Greer, SC Facilities: 37% of total electricity use
5. Wal-Mart Stores, Inc. / California and Texas Facilities: 1% of total electricity use
6. City of San Jose, CA: 16% of total electricity use
7. City of San Francisco, CA: 4% of total electricity use
8. Nassau County, NY: 15% of total electricity use
9. SC Johnson & Son: 13% of total electricity use
10. Los Angeles County Sanitation Districts: 7% of total electricity use

Too bad BMW is one of the top payers of CAFE fines to the EPA...

The amounts they paid over the 22-year period are:

• Mercedes-Benz USA, $226,128,170
• BMW North America, $225,531,779

To be clear - the factory is relatively "green"

The V8 powered X5s and X6s... not so much.

Yes and no......our government is stupid, so as far as I understand it CAFE fines are based on MPG averages, not emissions from the vehicles. So, V* X5s and X6s may not be fuel efficient, but I don't know how their CO2 and other forms of emissions rank versus other vehicles on the road.

Cheers,
