Tips on using the Rebel XTi

Hey guys, I got the XTi a while back and haven't used it much since. I'm going to France and Spain next week and was hoping to get some cool pictures. I've been messing around with all the setting on my camera so I can get used to them. However, whenever I take a picture in the auto mode, the pictures almost always come out extremely bright and everything seems white. When I use the "no flash" mode the shutter takes a few seconds to process the picture and it almost always comes out blurry. Even with the ISO set to 100 this happens occasionally. Any idea on how to get pictures that aren't washed out due to flash, or pictures with flash that don't turn everything white?

P.S. I would appreciate any other tips you guys have. I've been looking through a few threads and have seen so many amazing shots...some even taken with the XTi!

Practice by taking pictures with your Lambo! You can check out photos shot with the XTI, here: http://www.flickr.com/cameras/canon/...tal_rebel_xti/

Try playing with "P" MODE.

Thanks, I've been trying that. Besides ISO, what else can I change to help with shutter speed?

P.S. As soon as I get back from Spain, you can bet that's one of the first things I'll be doing!

First problem addressed! I made a n00b mistake and kept on setting the ISO to 100 when I should have been setting it to 1600!

I would keep the camera in full auto mode (green box) until you have a deeper knowledge into DSLRs. After you do some reading, most of your pictures will be in Av or Tv modes.

Not really, ISO 100 for anything outdoor, 400 and 800 is still very good for indoor. Keep a still hand.

Check out: http://www.Photography-on-the.net/forum for a lot of useful info on Canon cameras.

I own the XTi and you can use up to about ISO 400 before image quality is affected.

Also, I highly suggest shooting in RAW if you can process all the pictures after you get back. RAW pictures have MUCH MUCH MUCH more information per picture, allowing you adjust exposure levels and such. This way if you don't get the "perfect" shot, you can always work on it after.

Awesome! Any downside to using RAW over regular images? Besides not being able to print without processing the pictures.

shoot in AV (apeture ) Mode as much as posible and keep the iso as low as possible. lower f/ numbers ( ie 2.8, 4 and so on) will give you smaller depth of fiels. shooting in this mode, the camera will adjust the shutter speed for you so you dont have to worry about it as much.

Id say most people either shoot in av mode 85-90 of the time unless they shoot in full manual. then its another game all togehter.

also if you are having trouble with exposure, shoot in raw. it will let you adjust the white balance when you do you editing.

oh and i can spend hours on POTN surfing. there are so many dam links to so much info and insainely kick ass photographers.

Nope, the only downside is the processing work.

RAW can save your ass, but no matter what, the better the picture going in to the camera, the better it will be coming out.
