HUD requires a special windshield. Might be a lot more complicated then you think.

Yep, I'd want that yaw & pitch angles and altimeter readings on the windshield too! Oh, and how many sidwinders I have left.

I would probably just go for the fancy electronic steering wheel.. But I will say the HUD in a C6 vette is pretty cool, it has G meters, speedo, tach, engine gauges and you never have to look at the cluster to see how fast you are going. Not a must have but a cool gadget. |

Miss the HUD I had in the C6, especially in Track 2 mode. Was very useful because it allowed me to keep my eyes on the road, hardly ever looked at the gauges.

I recall some people having added a HUD made by HKS to their 350Zs. I do not remember if it required running a HKS ecu replacement or not though.

Heads Up is going to be available on the 2011 X3 so it should probably trickle over to the next generation 3 Series, as well. I had it on my last 550i and LOVED it for one very odd reason. It made me look intelligent. I could navigate to a strange destination with the arrow display and voice prompts off and get the directions on my HUD without anyone knowing I was using it. Made me look like I knew where I was going when in reality I was usually clueless.

Thank you everybody for making every M3 generation heavier. The next M3 F32 is going to get HUD, because that is what you want, but not need in an M3.
Sorry for going off-topic, but if you want HUD, get M5. |

I've always felt my M3 could use a HUD... especially for anyone with a DCT. How many times coming into a turn have you braked, shifted down and felt a bit unsure where you were between 1st to 2nd gear?
Look to your dashboard... oops! too late... your turned steering wheel is obstructing the gear indicator. It's a compelling reason to go 6MT!

HUD is safer and more practical ... its the future... and eventually it will make it to the M3 (maybe the F32) ...but to retrofit ....not gonna happen. Unless ur willing to settle for just speed (mph/kph).
So for this car - the new PSW is the best option - but it will not display mph/kph Last edited by mastek; 01-05-2011 at 08:13 AM.. |

I've seen a nice simple HUD installed in an 2000 Audi S4 - he was using it to display boost pressure.
It was a compact, relatively flat electronic style display that projected on the regular windshield. Looked ok, even in bright conditions. I asked the guy where he bought it and he told me the company making it had unfortunately stopped - not sure if it went out of business or simply stopped making it. But they are out there - probably for the Evo/Sti market. Edit: May have been this one: http://www.defi-shop.com/product/con...ncept_top.html

What do you want in a HUD? If it's basic stuff like speed then google "Globaltop HUD". There are iPhone apps that you can get to reflect off the windshield too that give you any info that the iPhone can give you -- speed, direction, altitude, G forces, etc. Problem with the iPhone is you have to reach up on the dash to change anything, unless someone has come out with some sort of bluetooth remote that I'm not aware of.
The M3 windshield will give a double image though. You can place something like an iPhone screen protector, or darn near any piece of clear flexible plastic, where the image will be to get rid of this double image, mostly. I did this with my V1 remote display for a while. You need to rewire the seven segment LED of the RD to reverse the image. Not hard if you're handy with a soldering iron. But I never really had it looking slick enough -- like OEM -- so it wasn't good enough for me. However, if you don't mind hanging stuff on your dash then these sorts of thing would be fine. There have been other more elaborate devices but I've only seen prototypes of these plus there would be a big installation effort. But they would look more integrated. In short, to make it look right you'd need to spend a lot of time, effort and/or money. It's probably not worth it to most of us. Cheers.
