Question regarding Chassis Codes

How come there is only one code covering the E46 sedan, coupe, vert, wagon?

And why is there a specific chassis code for the Coupe/Vert(E92/93), Sedan(E90), Wagon( E91)?

BMW started using different codes for different chasis' of the same generation car in 2001-2002 (with the E65/66/67 and with the exception of decimal numbers like E36/7) and this new system has been applied to the new chasis in the entire line since. E46 was a current chasis at the time of the change and wasn't subject to it. I don't know why they changed the naming convention though.

The E46 had a "c" on the rear badge to indicate coupe/convertible so it would be something like 325ci instead of 325i, which is a sedan/wagon.

The current 3 series no longer uses 'c' on the badge as the chassis code is now the factor used to distinguish the cars.
