Not driven the E9X 330i but currently driving an E46 330i and I'm staggered by how silky smooth it is. I've driven numerous 4-pot diesels (not owned, just driven) and as long as you're happy with the extra costs (which you've mentioned you are) I'd certainly aim your sights on the 330i engine.

The M Sport package is 'generally' more highly sought after but you really need to drive one to ensure you're happy with the firmer suspension (my M Sport E90 was ROCK hard to the point of tearing my hair out/strangely my E92 was fine though). The sport seats are a massive improvement and the sport steering wheel is the best I've used bar non (both can be specced on an SE) plus the obligitory body kit. I also love the smaller gear knob (think you've selected a few manuals from your search/no difference with an auto).

Discounts on used cars depends on the dealers willingness for a quick sale. If the car has been up for sale for a while you can get discounts easily (I purchased my X3 for £2.5k less than is was originally priced at after about 6 weeks on the forecourt). Between £500-£1,000 should easily be achievable from main dealers. To give you an idea of their margins they bought my E90 330d off me for £14k and was instantly for sale at £17.5k (obviously you need to allow them costs for prep & warranty).

Good luck.

e90 330i is the pick of the range in my opinion.

Beautifully smooth refined engine, gorgeous induction noise and an engaging drive.

There is plenty of power, but the car responds very linearly and rewards enthusiastic driving. The engine loves to be revved and performance is perfectly balanced with the ability of the chassis.

The power delivery in the 335i makes it less fun to drive in some ways. The higher torque makes it necessary to chase the redline and the extra performance just means that you run out of road sooner.

When you test drive, try to get a full bore run through the gears hitting the redline in 1st, 2nd (3rd if you have the room). Great fun

I quite miss mine

NFS, disconnect the exhaust flap on your 335 and it will sound even better.

Well I went for a test drive today in 05 plate 330i and an 06 330i m-sport. Loved both but preferred the m-sport styling and interior. Both were automatics, very smooth and bags of power

Interesting approach from the dealer. Tried for ages to get me into a PCP on a 4 year old car which I want to keep for a good few years! KEpt asking me why I didn't want to go for it. Took me 3 attempts for them to give me an HP cost idea which turned out to be a flat rate of 7.5 % so the APR must be 14% ish?

The 06 plate was £18,900 m-sport, pro sat nav, 38k miles, leather, xenon. This sees pricey to me - what do you reckon? Dealer said I had no chance of getting an m-sport for £15k - do you think I could at all?

Cheers!

Go for the M Sport
If its from a BMW dealer then 18k sounds about right especially as its quite high spec. I've been looking at 56 plate 330d's and similar spec ones have all been priced at around £20-22k.

You can get an 06 or 56 plate 330i M Sport for about 15-16k, either privately or through a smaller dealer.

£20 - £22k? wow.
I've been looking on autotrader and loads of 330i's going below £15k and we are talking about under 50k miles. I was just surprised how much more the m-sports are. Need to save up some more

I have just purchased a 2006 56 plate 330d M Sport with 67k on the clock for £15.5k, it came with a full service history etc etc and am really pleased with it, the only slight downside is it doesn't have xenons and only have the business sat nav but other than that am really pleased with it, the power is well it gives you a large grin. if your looking for a 330 I would go for a diesel!
