Alarm - locked the family in the car!

Whilst away over the weekend, I had to get out of the car whilst the family stayed in it. I accidentally alarmed/locked it. Upon my return I hear the car alarm blaring/lights flashing and wonder why the missus is just sat there, my kids screaming and crying at the noise.

Turns out that you cant open the doors (from inside) once its alarmed

So if I hadn't gone back - they would still be in the car now!!!!!

Is this normal??

Yup that's normal - the doors are deadlocked. However if they press the unlock button twice rapidly in succession, that should open the doors..!

She tried the button - she can't have pressed it twice then?

I think you have to press it twice quickly... not sure though as haven't had myself locked in the car since, ooooooh, never... I remember seeing a tech bulletin about it though...!!

Not come across these new fangled deadlocks before then Paul??? Breaking a window and climbing out is the only way you'd get out I'm afraid.

When I go in to pay for petrol etc, the missus locks the car from the button inside, that way no one can get in, but they can get out if they need to. You can unlock it when you come back with the key button as normal.

E92fan - I'm sure pressing the dashboard unlock button twice won't work as any thief could break a window, reach in and press the button and get in - defeating the whole point of deadlocking.

BTW: pressing the lock button on your keyfob twice still deadlocks the car but disables the motion sensors so you can leave pets inside without them setting off the alarm (or wife and kids if you like!)

yes i did that once to my brother, left him in the car as i walked away without thinking i hit the lock button on the keys

The alarm went off and he said he felt like a car thief sat there while everyone looked at him.

Needless to say he punched me pretty good when i got back

Doughboy is right - you can't get out if you are locked in.

Moral of the story: make certain the missus has the second key.

A pickup truck with two rednecks in the back ran off the road and ended up in a river. The driver was able to swim to safety but the two in the back drowned. They couldn't get the tailgate open.

In a crash situation, the car automatically releases the locks

Why not lock yourself in? Sit in the car and press the lock button on your key will achieve the same thing........

The doors are not deadlocked when you lock them from the dash button or if they autolock as you pull away. That would be really dangerous of course.

They only deadlock from the keyfob button (or a handle touch with comfort access) and not when the ignition is on.

Also when you have a crash and the airbags go off:

1. any locked doors will open
2. fuel pump cuts off
3. pyrotechnic exploding fuse cuts off the battery supply

And that's all rosy as long as it all works

Still going to get the life hammers though - had to do a H&S driving course at work the other day, and they are several scenarios when it would be £10 very well spent
