Crease on my Fender ?!?!?!

Hello All,

I just bought an 08' E90 M3, SSII and I love it! Went to go and detail her this weekend and, in a very specific light and angle, about 3" from the passenger side front wheel well, a shallow crease in the bumper (pic attached..ignore the two curvy lines..just reflections). There is no apparent damage to the bumper, the BMW dealership provide a car fax (no issues), and it drives fine. What could cause this?

Do you guys think the bumper has been repaired/repainted by looking at it? Is there anything I can do to correct it? Like I said, really shallow and not that noticeable...but I know

Anyway...opinions welcome as always.

looks like a paint imperfection of some kind or if the car is 2nd hand, the paint under it might have had an imprint of that crease and it's simply now showing in the paint.

Car is second hand. There was one owner before me. 17.5K miles on the clock. Anything one can do to correct it, outside of replace the bumper?

I had a similar issue with an '08 M3 I purchased from Stevens Creek BMW in '10. I didn't notice it when I bought the car, but there was a vertical crease on the rear bumper. It ran from under the passenger taillight all the way to the bottom of the bumper.

I was pretty pissed, and my salesman wouldn't give me the time of day. I ended up getting a hold of the GM of the dealership, and within two minutes he authorized a new bumper. It turns out that the original bumper was cracked, and was patched together by either the original owner or the dealership when they took in the trade.

I would start by notifying your salesman and setting up an appointment with him to take a look, and go from there. Good luck...

A good PDR guy should be able to massage that out, it would be my first attempt anyway, before having a bodyshop R*R, sand, paint, blah blah blah.

that is definitely a crease, as a result from a very light hit (it's either the imprint of the hit or your fender "folding" from the hit or a result of a repair of such an impact)

Generally with these damages, they heat up the fender to attempt to mold it back to shape, often they put filling in the creases and then repaint the entire fender to blend the paint properly... IMO, at this point, you can either request a new fender/bumper or have it repaired, one way or another, they'll need to repaint the entire fender/bumper. (I don't think fenders/bumpers come pre-sprayed from the factory).

This is tricky as SSII is a very unique color blend. Make sure you request the right bodyshop that doesn't cut corners and know how to mix BMW M specific paint. There's a forum member here that had a headache having a shop try to match a Mineral White bumper to his car.

A quick update...

I contacted the dealer about this. They told me that this couldn't have happened at the dealer and they have no contact with the previous owner... and besides you have had the car two months (actually only 5 weeks, but hey who is counting) but they would check with the used car manager and see what he says. Haven't heard anything yet, figured I would give him a day or two before I start escalating

Aren't the fenders made of plastic or composite? If so pdr would not work unless they have pdr now for non metal panels. Would be interesting to know if they did. I only guess as when I removed the gills to replace them, I noticed that they were not metal.

E90 is steel or aluminum, E92 used the plastic.

I believe all E9X M3's are plastic. I know my E90 are plastic as when I changed the gills, you can clearly see the plastic edge. I actually nicked it as well.

Yeah I believe you're right, I just tapped mine, sounds like plastic, but pretty strong plastic.

You bought a used car & you expect it to be flawless? I would expect it to have some flaws, otherwise you should have bought new

I bought a used car from a dealer and expect to be disclosed. The cosmetic issue I can live with (as others have suggested how to correct), but I do expect if they tell me nothing has been done to the car (structure, reconditioning, etc) and it is in great shape that if I find possible evidence to the contrary they at the very least justify their statement. Make sense?

Well, met with the used car manager today. He gave me a copy of the inspection and the car fax (still need to go over in detail, but looks ok). That puts my mind at ease that they did due diligence with respect to the working order of my car. Now, as far as to fix it, he gave me his card and said if I wanted to do something about it, call him. (probably wouldn't pay for it, but maybe give me a deal is the vibe I got). If the car is in working order, is this something I want to deal with (paint match, corrections, respray...the whole bit) or maybe just put a clear bra on to conceal it? What is the collective wisdom of the forum? How far do I push it?

Update :: Dealer emailed me to bring the car in. Looks like they had a change of heart. Going to repaint (or replace) the bumper. Dropped my car off this morning...hope all goes well. Once I get it back, I will post an after pic. Wish me well on the paint-matching! (SSII)

Good news! Got my car back today and I can't see the crease in the fender. I have attached a pic (sorry for the glare and the car is dirty from being at the body shop)....but presto...
