Exclamation Oil Cooler: Missing on my car - Called BMWNA, told not available on cars before 10/11

Hello All –

This year I purchased a 2011 335i e92 xDrive M-Sport Coupe with a build date of 07/11 – this is my second e92. To my dismay, after purchasing I noticed the vehicle did not have an Oil Cooler (or the S840 option). Since I wanted to have the BMW PPK installed and no dealership will install it without those options I was a little upset. So I did research and found that the xDrives only came with an Oil Cooler if you had the M-Sport Package and the 18in Wheel/Summer Tire package. Both of which I do have on my car so I was a little intrigued. As a result I decided to call BMWNA to see if they could shed some light.

First let me say BMWNA has been very polite through this ordeal but I am not happy with their “findings”.... I called them and relayed my questions, concerns, and the information I learned. I spoke with one individual and he said he would look into it – this individual called me every Friday saying there was no update then after 3 weeks he called and said he spoke with a number of people including the engineers and plant where it was built and had no answers. I was informed that this was a very unique case and would have to transferred to a “3 series specialist”. The same thing happened where the “specialist” was having trouble finding information than two weeks later I got a call Friday evening with the “results”.

I was told that my car was not supposed to come with an Oil Cooler – even though it had the necessary options of M-Sport and 18in Wheel/Tire package. So I asked what are the other requirements to receive an Oil Cooler, which after I asked that the expert seems a little squeamish on the phone. He said that the Oil Cooler option was only available on models manufactured on October 2011 or later. Obviously I knew this was incorrect so I pressed a little bit more but he kept going back saying that Oil Coolers were not available on cars manufactured prior to 10/11. I asked if this is all 3-Series, just xDrives, coupes, etc. and he said he wasn’t sure. I was then told that there is no retro fit for an Oil Cooler so there is nothing I can do. I was traveling at that time so I just said thanks for your time and assistance and hung up.

Obviously I know this isn’t true as I had an Oil Cooler on my 2007. I really do believe that BMW made a mistake during the build or vehicle write up and they can’t explain why I my vehicle does not have an Oil Cooler. To make things worse (for BMWNA) they provided an answer that I am 99% positive is incorrect. I wanted to reach out to you all to see if anyone had any information or suggestions as to what I can do next. I called again today to confirm the dates the representative said and I was transferred to someone new who said the person I was working with was “busy” and my case has been closed – but they did confirm with my representative while I was on the phone that “Oil Coolers were not available prior to 10/11”.

So no one chimes in “Why PPK, just got COBB/JB4” – I have 1 year left on factory warranty and then 2 years of CPO so I do not want to risk voiding the warranty.

Thanks so much

EDIT: If anyone has a 2011 335i xDrive M-Sport 6AT built before 10/11 please let me know and if possible please send me a Vin Decoder so I can have an example. THANKS

I'm curious to hear from folks that have XDrives built prior to 10/11.

From what i know about the oil coolers I think I have one on my 2010 335xi. The reason I believe that is that I can see the vents in the right hand wheel well.

If you have the vents then you should have the Oil Cooler. I don't think there was ever a situation to have the vents in the fender of the passenger wheel unless you had the oil cooler installed.

Would you mind running a VIN Look-Up and posting or Private Message me the results?

*Edit - I did notice you are from Canada so perhaps that would be the reason why but the Vin Decoder results would be great to see.

From my understanding reading this forum you had to have the sport package and the 18 inch staggered wheel setup to get the oil cooler on the 2008 and 2009 e92 models. However, I'm not sure if this changed with the LCI update.

Maybe you have already done this but have you been able to look at your options sheet for your car yet? Was it missing from the list as well or just on the car?

Well that sux. I do see them from time to time on ebay and the likes. Cooler, lines and all from a part-out. Not sure how this would work with being under warranty though. Does your local SA have an opinion on doing the retro concerning voiding the warranty? Maybe they could do the install to remain covered? Just thinking out loud at this point.

All great ideas! The one local BMW dealership I spoke with said that they wouldn't do a 'retro-fit'. Still waiting to hear from the other. But at this point I do not think it will be an option - at least to do it and keep warranty.

just to add few lines and some info, I have 2009 335d LCI (not x drive as diesels do not come as x drive cars) with no sport package, S840 is not listed after running vin decoder and i have 17" wheels. I do have small radiator installed in front of the passenger wheel base with some vents cut outs in the underline of the wheel cover. Is that oil cooler radiator?? If yes, then I can confirm that vin decoder does not list that option.

Like you said you had it on your '07, as do I.

Why can't they just come out and say some cars were decontented, some were not. Instead of sending owners on a wild goose chase checking their builds, if they had these tires, that tranny, this fake badged floor mat, etc.

Just come out and say it, to cut costs, some cars had it, some didn't. Then again that person at BMWNA is likely an intern just trying to make it through the summer, so don't shoot the messenger...

I have a June 2011 build 335i X-drive coupe and I have an oil cooler. As I understand you had to have the 18" wheel option which added the high speed limit which added the oil cooler. In fact you and I seem to be twins (almost identical cars). You can look up my car ID (E672165).

Thanks - I looked it up and we are almost identical - even built within a few weeks. That was my understanding too and it was confirmed I had the 18in wheel package (same as you; S2MFA)

This would be a great example to show him.

Thanks!

I have a 2008 xi sedan with Sport package / 18in wheels and I don't have the factory oil cooler. I was reading about this a few weeks ago, but now I read this thread, I wonder why I don't have one. I've just sent out an email to the local BMW dealership...

Well I called again and of course my adviser/rep wasn't available. So I left notes with someone else and asked for him to callback. I let them know of a 'friends' vehicle with the same options, built around the same time (well before 10/11) which has S840A/Oil Cooler so we will see what they say.

I went through our cars line by line, the only differences are; you had convenience package / navigation and you were built on a different day. The other difference is your are 6MT and I am 6AT - I bet that is what they will say.

I appreciate your help!

6AT or 6MT?

Can you share your last 7 of VIN or the decoder with me?

Thanks

Yup. They put it on the manual because if you hold the rpms up in the lower gears, it will run hotter. Somehow, they must have felt that anyone with the Auto would not push like someone with a 6 speed, even if they have the sport/paddles/etc..

I know this because... we met in court over the issue. Other than the judge making a statement as to not being able to understand why they would not entertain adding it for a repeat-loyal-to-the-brand customer over decades, they can do it ( and probably a lot more under the various weasel clauses), if you read the fine print in their literature.

Here's the actual written statement from the Judge, para's 42 & 43: <my name excluded>

“[42] In this regard, however it struck me from the outset that BMW threw away a perfect opportunity to provide some real and positive public relations by entrenching it’s position rather that endeavoring to satisfy an ardent and loyal BMW enthusiast. By his own account, <Name excluded> remains a BMW fan and has spent over $300,000.00 on BMW cars over the years.”

“[43] It confounds me, frankly, that BMW would not offer to install this component for <Name excluded> at a discount price. This was a case that could, and should, have been resolved very early on but for BMW’s intransigence. Had there been some agreement, <Name excluded> presumably would have been happy, BMW would have retained a loyal and knowledgeable customer, and this case would never have come to Court.”
