DIY - Homelink Retrofit (post production 09/06 without vehicle option #430 or #431)
THANKS to Evan@Tischer for the pdf, the part, and part numbers. Use getbmwparts.com it is easier to navigate than mileone (both Tischer)
BIG THANKS to longtran for removing the center console. BIG THANKS to l4wr3nc3 for holding the light. SUPER THANKS to snohman who did all the wiring and installation. For those of you without homelink, there are a few options. 1. You may purchase the entire homelink retrofit kit, which includes the mirror, ground wire, and retrofit wire (as shown in attached). The part number for this kit is 51 95 0 421 325 and is for vehicles without autodimming sideview mirrors and autofolding mirrors. Price is roughly $500 even though catalog states it is only $475. Click here for the PDF Installation Guide 2. If you are able to obtain the homelink mirror by other means, you will just need to purchase a retrofit wire, available from getbmwparts for only $27.20 + shipping. The part number for just the retrofit harness is 61 12 0 434 330. There is a minor difference for the second retrofit harness. The retrofit harness, if purchased by itself, has branches A6 and A7 precut. Simply follow the directions from the pdf. No dealership coding is required for this retrofit. Aside from the multitudes of wiring, this is technically plug and play. Summary: 1. Remove mirror. Wiggle the sides and the cover comes off. Gently twist mirror and the mirror comes off. For detailed instructions on how to take of your mirror, please visit SGxi's Mirror Installation Thread 2. Remove center console and follow the directions. For detailed instructions on center console removal, please refer to 2007_E93's Alarm Motion Sensor DIY thread. 3. Only pages 11 & 12 from the installation guide are applicable for US cars. also familiarize yourself with the diagrams. Here is a diagram I made to make your life much easier (the bottom of the diagram faces towards you): BEFORE AFTER Troubleshooting: If the compass is stuck--mine was stuck a "E" just punch your center console a bit and it will get working properly . DISCLAIMER: I am not responsible for any damages though hehe Last edited by AoshichanX; 02-28-2008 at 04:35 PM.. |

I used my little flashlight too haha... Funny we did it on the same night as well.
Wasn't running the wires a pain in the ass through that little hole and back through the rubber sleeve

I'm not a technical person nor am I an electrician but overall it looks quite easy and I was planning on doing this myself. Why do you guys have it rated as being very difficult?

if you can get your mirror off, and get the top console to pop off (held up there by 2 spring clips), it shouldn't be too bad. there is no wire splicing required, as all the wires just clip into existing harnesses. If you have some time and patience, you shoud be able to work it out yourself

Haha you purchased the wrong harness for sure. I am confused what you did purchase though, may I have the part #? Refer to my OP for the correct part # for just the retrofit harness. |

Part # 61 12 0 140 175 is simple a "cable set" meaning if your current (base model) mirror cable is worn through or damaged, you may purchase this to replace it. Part # 61 12 0 434 330 is the actual "retrofit wire". |
