What sort of driving instructors do you have in the US if they don't teach properly how to drive a car ? Being a woman myself, I know that some women are s*** drivers, but then again, I've seen some awfully bad man drivers as well so (no offense guys!) Small suggestion, if I may, why don't you teach her how to handle this kind of car first and make her feel confident about driving the 'beast' and then see if she even wants to drive it alone ?

One sure thing is, as soon as we get ours, we won't let anyone who doesn't know how to drive (according to our standards) touch our car ! It may only be a car, but it's also a lot of money to throw out of the window if something goes wrong...

You may have hit the nail on the head.

My son's "driver education" course was instructed by someone who was just doing it as a job. The road test to receive his license consisted of a 5 minute stint behind the wheel and as long as he didn't do too many things wrong, he was awarded the right to drive by the state.

This did not sit well with me and even though he had obtained his driver's license, until he was able to demonstrate the ability to drive properly, he was not given the keys to the car.

Driver's training in the US

Come on over to the northeast (DC, Philly, NY, Boston) and you'll be shocked. People never cease to amaze me between cell phones, makeup, and people trying to read newspapers...WHILE DRIVING!

And I did get flashed by some hot blonde in the back of a white Carrera4 vert while cutting across 7 lanes of traffic during friday PM rush hour right outside of city hall in downtown Philly.

So yeah...US drivers really suck in general.

Scary stuff... I was born in Finland where you have to pass a driving test during the summer AND winter (driving conditions being different in the rain, snow and ice, as we know) before the final driving licence is given - and there is of course the theory exam (10-12 hrs of lessons before you can take the exam if I remember right) first and then you get to drive a car with the instructor... so I suppose the basics on HOW to drive are indeed slightly different to the US

People on the phone, reading newspapers and putting on make-up (or shaving) etc while driving really get on my nerves also

One of the reason I am now a steptronic driver. In case of emergency and we are faaarrr away from home, she needs to take over. Plus when going to get togethers, I let her drive once I have something to drink (beer, etc.). But she only drives it once in a blue moon and mostly I am there with her. Mainly she drives the 07 MDX, so she complains about how low the car is, but she said it is soooo smoooooth. I know!

Yes and no. She drives my i3, but she has no interest in driving any of my previous and current M cars. Too loud, and too "bumpy". I'm fine with this.

As long as we're reviving this conversation:

Before we were married, my future-wife asked me to help her look for her first car when she graduated from college and was going to work. I told her if I helped, it would have to be a BMW. We found locally a 1973 BMW 2002 stick, which she drove until we had kids. She's driven nothing but BMWs ever since. And we still have that 1973 we purchased maybe 45-years ago. Today she has her BMW and I have mine. We also have about twenty others including six bikes, six convertibles, and many vintage cars. When her 128i was recently totaled she drove our 1985 535i stick for a few weeks before we came across a one-owner, low-mile 2007 328ix Sport. If we are out together in her car, I usually drive so I can check to make sure all is well. If she has to, she can drive my 128i M-sport stick. Sure she may not park as far away from other cars or curbs as I would, but she knows what I look for in a parking space and will happily point one out to me when we're together. All good.

She's the only person I let drive my car. Handles the thing well, appreciates the power. Besides, she's seen me naked.

Well.. my wife got her license a few months back and recently put a nice scratch on the right side mirror of our Hyundai she only told me a few days later..
Not so sure about it right now, hahaha

Of course, she can and will drive the car but probably not the first few weeks/months :-p

When I first got my car she loved to drive it, but once it was lowered she didn't like it as much for fear of scraping the front on the driveway. Then when I got a nice set of aftermarket wheels she didn't want to drive it at all, and now that I have the FI-R's she hates the experience. In fact, she's pledged to never drive the car again once I get a different daily driver and don't have to use her car from time to time.

Makes sense.

My wife always says she wants to drive the Z3 5sp MT. I always say 'sure, I'll be happy to teach you to drive a stick. Any given Saturday afternoon". She hasn't taken me up on it yet, it's been 14 years. I tell her the 135i DCT would be like an automatic, she really wants to be interested, but she isn't really. She loves her '19 Ford ranger FX4, and is nice enough to let me drive it whenever I want.

Maybe he just got married

On the topic, i don’t know why someone wouldn’t let their wife drive their car, unless they’re not physically capable of. Having someone to help move cars around, drive you home when you’re drunk, etc. is very useful. To me, even worth curbing a wheel or two (and for the record, I’ve curbed more wheels than her at the score of 2-1)

cars are much cheaper than divorces. The very word "let" is troublesome for most marriages.

Agreed. Beyond the obvious, at the very least she already owns half of it, and if the cards aren't played right...all of it.
