New winter tire sensitive traction control + disabling TPMS

Hi all,

Long time reader, first time poster. Bought a 2011 E92 w/ M-sport (18") package and just installed my snow tires - bought a down-size General Altimax Arctic package 225/45R17 from Tire Rack with rims. So today I drove them to work for the first time and noticed something odd. When on the highway (good quality road), when I accelerated from around 100kph-120kph (60-72mph), the traction control indicator started coming on. I had to consciously accelerate more lightly than normal to keep it from kicking in. Never had this problem with the stock 18" all-season RFT's. Is this normal? I know winters don't have the same traction, but at highway speeds to lose traction like that? It got me scratching my head. I wasn't *flooring* it to make this happen either.. Perhaps the new tires just need some time to 'break in'?

Second issue - this is a USA car imported to Canada. Is there any way to disable that TPMS light? My winter tires/rims don't have TPMS (it's not law here) so would be nice to not have that yellow dash light in my face all winter.

My "small" 320d does the same thing with winters on. I believe it's because of the soft tires.

no way to disable the light unless you code it out i think.

For the traction issue, could be the tires are brand new and there is some break in period for them.

Thanks all - I just found online that tires can indeed take up to 200 miles to 'break in' as apparently there is some compound applied to them to eject them more easily from production molds, and that compounds can take a while to wear through.

As for the TPMS light, sounds like I'll just have to live with it like I live with the fog light lamp (previous owner replaced factory fog lamps with LED style..)

Check out this TPMS emulator that Turner Motorsports sells:

That should turn the light off with no coding required.

If you have JB4 you can disable the TPMS light from one of the menus. That's what i'm doing for my winters

The winter tires are still giving me trouble after 300km on the road. Perhaps these are just low grip for the power being generated at the axle? And since I went down to 225 (from the stock 255) in the rear, that won't help either..

Is this the first time you have mounted studdable winter tires on your 335i? Even on my 190 hp E46, these soft tread tires would often trigger the traction control warning (has nothing to do with TPMS, BTW). This is the penalty you pay for the best possible snow traction, so carefully modulate your right foot while they are on the car.

Hopefully things will improve a bit when they are scuffed in, but don't expect too much from them - until you have to negotiate snow.

I'm in the same boat... I noticed the same thing with the t/c light. Except I bought 225/40/18 Bridgestone Blizzak WS-70's.
