Former BMW head of design Chris Bangle has released a novel, and along with it a drawing contest to win a trip to his studio in Italy.

It comes as no surprise that the novel is about transportation vehicles, but this is a fictional novel, titled "Peter Teufel: A Tale of Car Design in 3 Parts." Bangle utilizes a fictional setting and character to explore 3 main topics: the secret to 'true car design' in the past, the 'twisted reality' of car design as it has become today, and the inevitable consequences the current reality will have on the future.

The prologue of the book describes six types of vehicles, of which Bangle invites readers to submit drawings [contest details]. The grand prize winner will receive a trip to Chris Bangle Associates (CBA) studios in Italy or €2,000. Ten other winners will have their designs showcased on the studio's website and published in the second edition of the book.

Chris Bangle worked as head of design at BMW for 17 years before leaving in 2009 to start his own design studio, Chris Bangle Associates. Prior to BMW, Bangle spent time at Opel and Fiat.

During his time, he was one of the most controversial and well known designers in the automotive industry. Many of the designs from his BMW days remain controversial and much discussed to this day. He oversaw the design of the current and previous generation 7 series (E65, F01), three generations of 3 series (E36, E46, E90) and 5 series (in particular the E60), the launch of the X5, X3, X6, 1 Series, Z4, and the revival of the 6 Series and MINI.

-I look forward to one day meeting Mr Bangle.

The criticism Chris received over the years became almost cliche. I personally was a huge fan of his!

Personally, i think Bangle's revolutionary designs have some oddities, but I don't think he deserved even half of the criticism that he got.

And I think its funny that some of the car companies that made fun of him have turned around and put a "bangle
butt" or E60 style trunks on their cars.
I think his goal of bring emotion into car design was brilliant.

Wow a BMW thread that is supporting bangle. This has to be a first.

I have to say he was a part of making some of the most beautiful BMWs we've ever known. But I think about the only one he screwed up was the previous seven series.

Alot of people may critisize his designs, but i personally was a huge fan,, i think his time with BMW came out with some of the best looking BMWs.

His designs were innovative, revolutionary, and daring and I think thats the language a leading brand like BMW shud follow.

Unlike the other comments here, I really don't like his design especially the E60. I still think it is one of the ugliest cars out there. However, I do have to say that this guy revolutionized car design's world. Just look at the eyebrows he started for example. Now pretty much every BMW, or actually, a lot of cars have eyebrows. This is not just it. So is flame surfacing and on and on. This guy is no doubt one of the greatest designers of all time. Adrian is still my best man though

Agree i like AVH as well but him and Bangle have similar philosophies. Adrian actually designed the 7series(E65) while working under Bangle. Something people always blamed Bangle for. Of course Bangle had to approve the design, but nevertheless. I loved that car and just couldn't understand why people were so outraged by the looks.

For me Adrian is clearly Bangle's pupil, just a lil more mainstream i think, but you cant deny the origins and thats a good thing.

I never thought the E60 was that bad, however the pre-LCI E65 is just terrible.
