The numbers speak for themselves regarding SAVs. They continue to rise and in some cases dominate and are beginning to dominate established segments.
If there is any model type that has grown rapidly it is the SAV and Crossover segments. And they continue to grow and grow.

M100 is the internal description of the planned BMW M sports car.
The journey to this car is far from complete as BMW management have specified that the car cannot be a me-too project and has to advance against the competition. The investment of BMWi is a huge advantage for the project to become a reality.

I think the M100 would be a good name. It pays homage to the M1 without mucking up the current nomenclature.

I hope BMW knows that when playing against the big boys, things like Active Sound are not going to cut it and will only make them a laughing stock of the super/hypercar community.

I'm liking the idea of an X7,X8,X4, CS Gran Coupe and M100. They can keep that X2 and FAST on the drawing boards. BMW is going to have so many models, it's going to be polarizing. I get it though, create niche markets which may see 20-30k units sold world wide and those numbers start to add up with profits growing even more withe economies of scale.

M100 has a chance of being cool, but it also has zero chance of being cheap enough for me to afford, so you suck BMW

As for the popularity of SUV's, McDonalds sells billions of hamburgers and makes a ton of money, but that doesn't make them any more appealing to people who know a thing or two about food. I'm sure it'll be a great move for BMW's bottom line, but I personally couldn't care less about that. Gimme new z4m

SCOTT, I only have one question? Are we going to see any two door SAVs in the next three years? As a tall guy my only complaint about my x1 is that the door length is pretty short. I gave myself rug burn on my left knee getting in it in a hurry last week, and that never happened in my old 335xi coupe...

Seconded. Actually, I'd love to see a 3-door SAV without rear seats, but instead have a lower and truly flat cargo area. I never ever use the rear seats, but do like cargo space while still having a relatively short and nimble car.
But at least a 3-door. If the Evoque can sell as a 3-door, I'm sure the X1 can too.

Another vote for that as well.

I loved the Saab 9-3X concept they showed almost 10 years ago, which was very much in that vein.

An Impreza with a lion badge?

Sorry, I'm not too fond of the X Saabs; they're not really Saabs any more than the new Mini is a Morris.

Yup, awd with a dual scroll turbo 2.8L V6 as well.

GM missed a trick not putting it into production, Saab might still be around if they had.

The auto media are beginning to push the agenda on the forthcoming BMW X7 Concept.

The new Range Rover has shown the luxury market that luxury SUVs are the successor to the large luxury sedan , with Bentley following suit with their large luxury based SUV. Mercedes'es G-Force concept showcased S-Klasse potential as an SUV.

Rolls-Royce initially were against the concept for the brand because if a RR Customer can afford a RR he can surely afford the best of everything which as it stands is the new Range Rover. Now they see potential to offer the ultimate luxury SUV for its rising customer base.

BMW CEO Norbert Reithofer is answering to demand for a larger BMW SAV.
A luxury Sports Activity vehicle based off the next 7er platform with its significant weight reduction due to a mixture of lightweight materials combine into A complete cross of luxury and sports orientated dynamics and performance.

The idea is not new but such a vehicle is being demanded by BMWs strategic markets such as North America and China.
Such as this recent article : http://www.autonews.com/article/2014...45J5745912E3Z#

The idea is to capture the different sportier appearance of the first generation X5 which at the time showed how individuality led to success by completely making the car closer to the road and more orientated for on road use.

The new car comes in at the size of a Range Rover but more athletic , with a rising glasshouse and dynamic sloping roofline made possible by the extended wheelbase , overall appearance and outline of the car becomes less upright and owes more to the original outline of the first BMW X5 but will keep within BMW X design parameters.

The interior will match the luxury of the larger 7er with similar accommodation in the rear for two or three passengers. Seven seats will also be available.

The progression of exclusivity for the BMW X7 would mean the first production V12 SAV model although BMW has evaluated V12s in the E53 previously although not just in the X5 LeMans but also evaluated the previous V12 within the E53 in order to give the E53 X5 a serious luxury performance edge or be equipped in the first proposal of the X7 that was frozen in 2001.

One of the model highlights will be a plug in hybrid e model equipped with BMW eDrive and a six cylinder topping out at over 400PS but with the impressive consumption of a compact X1 entry SAV.

Are you telling me that BMW is seriously considering developing a V12, Scott? Just for one model? How will they amortize this?

@Levi and @mkoesel, get your butts in here.
