Rusty Wheels!!

Has anyone else got rust forming on the hub thats between the alloy and the disc brake?

Mine (especially at the back) are covered in rust aleady and ive only had in 2 monthes!

Can i get this changed under warrentee?

Lots of cars I see on a forecourt has this these days. Mine went like it in under a year. That and the brake disc rusting are the worst thing about cars (seems to affect BMWs a lot) which have gappy alloys so you can see it. If I recall correctly I sanded down and painted mine and they looked superb afterwards.

Mazda RX8s had this problem and I claimed under warranty, as did many other owners. as a result the hubs were treated and painted. It is not acceptable, particularly on an expensive motor. If the BM starts to show signs of rust I'll be straight down to the stealership demanding that action is taken at their expense.

Mine also has spots of rust at the wheel hubs also. Let us know what the dealer says Rochester.

On reflection I should've gone to the dealer however I wanted to paint the brake calipers so did this at the same time and has been fine since. best get dealer to sort.

thanks for the link, thats fair enough about getting on my hands and knees, but to be honest i didn't spend £41,000 on a car to have to scrub rust off it!

Its just not good enough and will be getting my dealer to sort it out.

Agreed!

I will have a good look at mine when changing to summer-wheels. There wasn't too much salt on our roads this year.

Keep us posted about what your dealer said.

I've got a similar problem with my E92. Having read the earlier post re Mazda I've just rung my dealer & they said bring it in & the warranty manager would look at it before they would comment

just spoke to my dealer, they said that BMW have told dealers to stop replacing these hubs as it is not a 'mechanical' fault!

So by that rule if my Sat Nav explodes they wont replace it because it not a 'mechanical fault'!

They did however say that BMW can replace these items on 'good will'. I am going to my dealer on saturday for them to asess my car and me to see if i am worthy of BMW's good will!

Not happy!

Ive just bought my car, have an M3 on order, am looking at buying a Mini and my dad has ordered an M3 though them aswell! Thats alot of business and they are questioning replacing some wheel hubs, i have got a good mind to cancell the M3's and look elsewhere for a MINI if this is not corrected!

I suspect they will sort your wheels Rochester - you sound like a valued customer of theirs. I can appreciate their stance to a degree though, as this affects just about every BMW 3 series I've seen to a degree and it is cosmetic in reality although it bugs the hell out of me.

It is relatively easy to fix yourself although I know you shouldn't have to. I found the brake calipers also rust and so you can kill two birds with one stone. If you really want to pimp your car up you could paint them red

Ive yet the see an E90 with these bits painted red, although i think that black could look ok.....

Might look ok though I guess...

I did mine in a kind of silver colour so they didn't stand out with the wheels. Can't find the post now...was nearly 3 years ago.

I can't appreciate BMW's stance at all. If Mazda can rise to the occasion and sort their rusting hubs out, then I would certainly expect BMW to do the same. Rust is unacceptable full stop. If I wasn't concerned about how my car looked I wouldn't have botherecd to buy an expensive coupe and invest time and effort in washing it and waxing it to keep it looking good. Why on earth should the customer be expected to solve the problem themselves? Why should goodwill enter the equation if the car is under warranty? This is typical of the attitude that big companies seem to adopt these days. :mad:

Sorry if my rant sounded like it was aimed at your earlier comment.

Just really hacked off with having to fight for what should be basic fair treatment as a customer...and mine's not even rusting yet!

I went to see my dealer on saturday and they have taken pictures of the areas of rust on the wheel hubs and are going to put forward a 'good will' claim to BMW HQ!

I didn't kick up a fuss on saturday as I dont care if they want to call it 'good will' or gods will' i just want the rust gone! If they come back and say no then they will see a different side to me!

Usually BMW are pretty good when it comes to good will and if they aren't then sometimes a dealership will sort something. Worst case you could threaten small claims court as it could be claimed to be a defect. Where I have found them to be absolutely useless and unhelpful is in relation to anything A C Shnitzer the dealer puts on your car - BMW don't want to know. That's why my new car doesn't have any

Lee,

Had exactly the same thing on my 2005 330d M Sport. BMW wouldn't do anything about it, so I painted the calipers and bells with a combination of silver and gold smoothrite. Will post pics later but it looked fantastic. Clearly the bells were normal silver and the calipers a mix of gold and silver, so effectively "light gold", as per the standard finish.
