Old news. I never liked Castrol oil. I've tested and tested that stuff in labs, and it isn't very good at all.

The article was posted about a day ago. It's not that old.

Interesting. I always thought and learn from very good technicians that Castrol IS the real good oil. I also had only good experience with Castrol in many aspects. I am actualy a Castrol guy, I have always used Castrol in my cars. I was able to see one of my engines open after using Castrol and it was just like new inside, with no deposits, nothing.
I just hope that BMW did not made the switch due to price, to get it cheaper, that will really be a very dumb move.
I would really like to know WHY they switch to Shell.

Top secret insider information. That is how far it goes with regards to transparency and disclosure.

does this mean that BMW will "recommend" Shell gasoline in their manuals being that Castrol is part of BP group...

Why? Because they probably got a better deal from Shell than Castrol.

Much rather they moved to Mobile 1 but it is what it is.

S54's are out of warranty...so I wouldn't think BMW would care.

I would like to believe that there is a logical explanation, i.e. a better product. If is about getting a better deal, then, this will be just another element that will contribute to the general perception that BMW is moving in the wrong direction...
I hope not....

I'm guessing it was part profit margin, part 'Shell oil allows us to gain .0000009 mpg more in testing'.

Blah Blah about the oil transition part and all, I just noticed that weird signature at the bottom.

Me too. Used M1 on all my past cars and they all ran like silk on the day I sold them. I just use the BMW oil now because I don't like the idea of going back and fourth every time. After the service period is up, I'm switching to Mobil 1.

My brother-in-law works for Shell and told me about this awhile back. Their new Penzoil Platinum is derived from Natural Gas so it's purer than any synthetic can get close to being. Ferrari switched a bit ago and now BMW. It's supposedly the biggest breakthrough in oil since synthetic.

Admittedly I am an audio engineer and not a petro-chemical engineer, but I never heard of purity being a factor in comparing engine oils. Wouldn't purity go out the window soon after you started using it? My understanding was synthetic oil's main advantage was temperature stability.

BMW Parts system now shows all in production engines will receive new oil caps asof January 2015 production.

I can see a lot of enthusiasts running out to get teh new "BMW recommends Shell" caps

Ya. It was announced in the Spring or Summer. BMW will have a rough time keeping it on the shelves because the Euro spec is almost impossible to find.

As much as I love Amsoil, they do not (at least last I checked) make a LL-01 oil for us.
