Always loved your videos mate!! Nice vid as usual!!

Btw when I bought my car I also had a not so nice experience from my dealer, and killed them on the "survey".

Guess what, the dealer called me right away, asked me what could have been done differently, sorry not meeting expectations, blah blah blah… but they have been nice since then!!

I mean that's what the survey is for, right??

Personally, I think some people just don't get it unless you TELL them, sometimes it's one way to speak out!!

Really nice video, Nick. Always watching your videos ...

On the other hand I am absolutely sure you will be back to Porsche soon. A BMW is no substitute for the pure driving pleasure a Porsche offers.

It is always some kind of compromise in comparison. One time a Porsche, always a Porsche It spoils you for the rest of your life.

It is a bit like comparing a Golf GTI to a BMW M3/M4. A GTI is also a good car, can be a lot of fun. But it is no M3 or M4.

And a BMW is no Porsche.

Nevertheless I am looking forward to my test drive in november of the M4. I like it for what it is and I am curious how much I will enjoy driving it

Driving fun for me is not about numbers. Not acceleration, not lap times. I would always prefer a base Boxster or Cayman to an AMG S Class Mercedes, eventhough the Mercedes will accelerate harder and will pull out faster lap times. But driving fun can't be measured in seconds. Pure driving fun is the feeling, the feedback, the handling ... no matter how quick, but how joyful.

Looking forward to see your next 911 ... probably next year?!

Answer truthfully Nick: you never thought about selling the M4 and buying a new 911?

yes, you must be comparing a M3/M4 to a 911 turbo. That's the only way anyone could assume similarities between a GTI and a M3/M4 and a M3/M4 and a Porsche. Also just about matches the price point comparison as well. In which case, it really is not much of a comparison....

@doug:

I don't talk about simple acceleration figures. Sure the GTI may be slower than the M3/M4. As well as Cayman(S) or Boxster(S) or base Carrera.

I talk about fine touches like e.g. traction.

The GTI will put the power down really bad on the straight. Spinning the front wheels.

Now the BMW M3/M4 is a step up from there as it will put a bit more of its power in acceleration.

But then drive a Porsche Boxster/Cayman/911(S) and see what happens ... it grips nearly like an AWD car without the disadvantages of this.

Or just feel the controlability.

Push the pedal to the metal in the GTI: you will nearly count to one before it starts to accelerate ...

Now the BMW. Step up again. The lag should be less.

And finally the Porsche. Every foot movement transforms directly into engine power made available. Perfect controlabilty.

I just talk about the pure driving experience. The fun about driving the car. Not practicality.

Not being in a traffic jam without a chance to really accelerate. Or driving over bad roads.

Just the pure fun moving the car. Without any luxury. Just the car and you.

Then you will see the BMW in the middle. Better than the GTI, worse then the Porsche. Just my opinion.

As dd it may be a whole different story depending on taste ...

See also http://f80.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...4&postcount=50 for more fine touches ...

The Turbo(S) is more shifted as DD and not as pure sports car. It may be the quickest most times but not the most controllable. There the 911 GT3 is king and the 911 S is more there than the Turbo IMO.

@doug: Sorry, you are right. Gets a bit offtopic now. It is just because Nick also compared the M4 to his 911 and what he likes about them.

I just wanted to express, that I bet with you the Thread creator Nick Murray will return to Porsche, as an M4 is no substitute. Thats all I wanted to express.

Perhabs Nick can say something if he plans to keep the M4 for the next 10 years or will return to Porsche in the forseeable future ...

Your first 10 posts on this forum are just epic

Glad you love Porsche so much and feel the need to share it... over and over again... on a BMW forum

Hehe thx.

But I am also BMW fan somehow. For different reasons. I love the mix of the M3/M4 as kind of an allround car. Otherwise I would not read and write here.

Mercedes is to comfy for me and they always try to change their image. Luxury for old people, now super dynamic for young. They don't really know what they want to be.

Audi is a bit boring somehow. Yes, AWD can be great, but also a bit boring. And they try hard to be as sporty as BMW but somehow they fail for me.

BMW however has a cool mix between stylish car and sports. They tend to get a bit more comfortable and great for dd which is just great for me and my prefered mix, as for motorsport I prefer Porsche and still a BMW is very sporty and usuable as dd at the same time.

Though M5 or M6 are to heavy and big for my personal taste. And the 1 series or now 2 series is to similar to the Cayman just in worse for me.

Looking forward to test driving the M4

For me personally I guess it is a nice addition but no substitute. We will see. Will test drive an M4 in 2 weeks and looking forward to it.

Well, you showed us!

I think the debate is now settled and you clearly won

P.S. I don't think many would argue that the 911S is a better pure sports car which is also a lot more money (if that matters). Whether it is a better all around car is very debatable... He seemed to suggest, several times, that the M4 is the best all around sports car around today.

He misses the go kart feel of the 911... which I can appreciate... but he didn't say it was the better car

You can't blame Nick too much...

Once you drive a 911, it's a hard thing to let go of...

I symphatized with the guy and his 911 problems at first but day by day I realize that he is nothing but an attention whore. I will look forward to his new 911 complaints video that is soon to come...

And he is so full of BS, it's not even funny and people buy it... I especially like the "I am not a wealthy guy" comment but I am about to order a high speced 911 turbo lol. Please...

@gthal

Yeah, best allround is really hard to decide. As allrounder I also wouldn't see the 911 for sure.
Maybe the BMW M3/M4, especially the M3, is a better allround car.

The Porsche is just a very fun driving car.

Perhabs now I will go for the M3 and give away my Porsche after driving it. That would be a funny twist, wouldn't it?

@EMPunker Exactly.

@ASAP I like him

Watch the video 4 posts above yours.

He says he really likes the M4, no issues, great car, etc, but he is getting the 911. Not because there is anything wrong with the M4, just wants a 911.

....not exactly a rebuke, is it?

Sorry didn't see this...also I didn't post it as a rebuke. A lot of us on the Pcar site thought he would migrate back. I too as a former owner are contemplating either keeping my e92 M3, moving on to a M4 or get what I really want a Porsche 991S..

Yeah, no worries. Wasn't necessary smacking you down as much as making sure his views were more clear.

He is a single guy with 2 small dogs and apparently endless money to get new cars (or a surprising degree of comfort with a constant, significant, car payment). In his shoes, a Porsche may well make more sense. If he could afford it, he is precisely the kind of guy who would likely get a Ferrari.

The thing I love about an M3/M4 is how widespread the potential market is. Everyone looking for a pure sports car for himself and a couple of pugs (eg: Nick) to people will young families wondering if they can squeeze rear facing car seats into it.

What I appreciate about his views is that he isn't trying to bash one car (the M4) to justify his decision; he respects it (just as a guy like me, who is F80 bound, respects a Porsche). he is just making a subjective choice.

M4 review

Nick,
Nice summation of your viewpoints. Love the exterior color but always afraid I will be sick of it after a while
My M6 is SG and silversotne interior. Love the interior but had to put towels down to prevent the wifes or my black/blue jeans from staining. But i think the contrast certainly makes the interior "pop".
Unfortunately the M6 has been a service dog and BMW is buying it back.
Picking up an M4 in 2 weeks. Blk/Blk because that was the only one that I could find quickly. to order would be 6-8 weeks i did not want to be down for.
My choices to purchase are: Both in stock btw

M3, Sakhir Orange ext with silverstone
M4 blk/blk. Leaning toward the M4

If you have test driven both, did anyone else notice that the M3 felt stiffer and tighter
Again. Thanks for the great review and time you put in.

Wink Controls - It's the little details...

I totally agree with Nick regarding the steering-wheel stereo controls; volume, stations, etc. > They should be definitly switched.

Regarding the lack of a Parking position on the DCT stick shift. I feel that is a must have! But at least it still has a manual parking break. I heard from one BMW dealership a story about another BMW dealership putting a brand new prepped 7 Series in park or so they thought, and the employee got out of the car and went into the office and than came back out only to find that the car mysteriously disappeared, but then he looked out the double sided garage and saw that it rolled down declining hill into a ditch, and the only thing that stopped it was a fence totaling the brand new 7 Series. Fucking electronic parking with out a manual break lever is nuts to me.

Thanks Nick.
