Summer Tire Suggestions
Hey all, I'm just trying to get some opinions on what tires I should get for my summer set.
I have the oem style 264s so I would be running either a 215/40/18 & 245/35/18 or I may go with the 225/40/18 and the 255/35/18. I do not track the car, so I don't need an extreme summer tire. Any suggestions are welcome though. Thanks. |

These "225/40/18 and the 255/35/18" are the perfect size for the stock rim. I went with Hankook V12 with these sizes.

Tell us more about the wear and performance benefits, specific to the 1series, you feel are gained through XL tires.

I too will need sumer tires soon. Right now I have factory Dunlap RFT - that I am happy with. The ride could be bettter but its Ok.
I would really like to go with non RFT this summer. Gill what would you suggest. I want really good wet (autobahn driving) and dry performance. Especially good steering response. I worry when I go to non-RFT I will loose some crispness of steering "feel" when turning into a turn. Suggestions? |

Since you obvioulsy don't agree with that post...What tire in stock 18" size would recommend for best tread life. I'm willing to sacrifice some performance for tread life. I commute almost 80 miles round trip M-F and would prefer not to buy tires every year. I already have a winter set of Conti WinterExtreme (thanks to you).

Since Bridgestone just came out with a $70 MIR, I went ahead and ordered the Potenza RE760 Sport in 225 and 255
I hope they last longer then my OEM Dunlops 100% bald rear tires at 11.5k

I am leaning towards the Continental DW's. There seems to be alot of simular named Conti's and Michelin PS2's out there. I will most likely go with the 225/40/18 and the 255/35/18 on my stock wheels.
Any other tire suggestions? |

Those Continental DW's have great reviews as you know, I personally would go with them. However, I wanted to save a little cash and I ordered the Potenza RE760 Sport for only $652 shipped and I'll get $70 back in rebate. I know the performance is not as good, but its definitely a tire to consider and very competitive at that price point.

The Sport Contact 3 is heavily focused on OE applications. The DW has a very concentrated focus on aftermarket fitments.
The DW is the newer Continental tire and it scored better in our testing and our customers reviews. I don't know of any one performance category where the Sport Contact 3 will best the DW. The Sport Contact 3 also costs much more than the DW across the size range. With that said they are very similar tires, obviously, and both are great performers. I think it would be fair to think of the DW as a slightly evolved version of the Sport Contact 3. It's splitting hairs....but there is much more value in the DW.

The Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetrics are great tires for dry/wet traction, but their tread life is shit. I still recommend them depending on how much you drive, but I've had to replace the rears about every 5-6 months. Three changes on the rear to 1 pair on the front. Chose the Hankook's this go around, expecting a drop in traction, but $ savings and increased tread life.

What about Z1 Star Specs? ..that's what I plan to put on mine when I get it.. They grip so good! ..tread life? ...ehhh not the best but the grip performance you get out of 'em is definitely worth it.

As Rodi has experienced in the above posts with the GY F1s, expect to see limited tire life from the Dunlop Z1 Star Specs as well. All these max/super/ultimate/etc. performance tires will have very limited tire life especially with the ease the 135i puts the power down onto the rear wheels. It's a trade off for ultimate handling versus tread life. Heck my Hoosier R compound tires are lucky to see two maybe three track weekends. We are talking less than 500 miles and they are toast.

i wonder how good the life is on the PS2's. almost got those instead of the V12's. and if these V12's can't handle my 350 foot-lbs of wheel torque, i'll be getting the Michelin's.

Okay, so I decided against the hankooks because they have received some very mixed reviews where they are excellent in the beginning of their life, but they often fall off in the later part of their life.
So, I think I have it down to either the Continental ExtremeContact DW's in sizes 215 and 245 Or the Potenza 760's in 225 and 255. I'm on a tight budget so that is why I can only get the Conti's in the stock size. The conti's in the 225/255 size were over $100 more and I just can't do that right now. So basically, I am asking for your opinions on which of these two set ups I should get. Any opinions are welcome. I'm looking to pull the trigger on this purchase in about a week or two. Thanks guys. |

More info to add to your confusion.
2011 135i with 3,800 miles. 1,500 miles on the OEM 18" wheels w/RFT, 1,500 miles on OEM 17" wheels Blizz RFT, 800 miles on OEM 18" wheels w/Yokohama S.Drive (OEM size). Observations: Out of the box, a little disappointing. OEM RFT heavy rotating mass, heavy on the unstrung weight. Rotating mass makes a difference in acceleration and deceleration effort. Un-sprung weight (wheel/tire/part of suspension) makes a difference in compliance, that is the heavy wheel/tire had trouble maintaining road surface contact on "wash board" road surfaces. Winter tires/wheels: a little better on the above because of less weight, but obviously, less dry traction and a little slower steering response. DSC comes on more often. Yokohama S.Drive: Very nice. Noticeable difference in road compliance and comfort. Price was right. I'll let you know how long they last. Wider shoulder tire for the size - looks better than the Potenza. I carrier a 12v air compressor and a tire plug kit. |

I shall be watching this thread as I'm in the CS7 18" group buy and need an economical and long lasting set of 225/255's for them.
So V12's are out due to worn in performance, Continental DW's are a bit pricey and S.Drive seems to get the nod. Anyone else have suggestions? My concern with the RE760's is weight. Any thoughts on that? |
