Is it just me or more and more cars are looking like BMW's?

From the new Accord to some of Audi's new models,I see a lot of flame surfacing,BMW's stance, etc... The new A5 even has some kinda of angel eyes,so is the new Camaro and Saabs.

With the exception of a few car manufacturers like Porsche etc. most that laughed at Chris Bangle's designs now are copying em it seems like.

Agreed to some extent. Look at the lines on the rear of the new camry. Also, the Pontiac G8 is blatantly copying the 5 series.

German sedans, coupes tend to be fairly homogeneous. Unless your name is Lotus, Ferrari, Corvette, Porsche, or any other true exotic brand, there will be SOME sharing in lines and details.

Look at Audi. Look at their "Tornado line" that runs down the side. Benz adopted the sharp creases and pinched metal in their new Fascination concept (which will translate to the E and E-Class Coupe). Ford's kinetic design involves the same spiel. Lots of carmakers are doing it now.

its been happening for awhile.... everyone flamed (no pun intended) the guy for ugly cars, but yet all new models have hints of his design in them.

Cars of various eras and similar market roles have always looked pretty similar. Enough so that you can tell what decade pretty much any car is from, due to similar styling cues shared amongst all manufacturers for that category of car.

For example, without looking at the image source, which is the Ford and which is the Chevy?

its the automotive business... every OEM copies the other... they brand themselves differently but try to take into account what their competition offers to steal market share.

Ya I wish people would make their own designs now... but that wont happen.. its just like "musicians" nowadays, redoing music from the past as if it were their own..

however I actually like the G8's interior ^ a lot..

Similar maybe, exact copy? No. About as similar as any sedan was to any other sedan in any era. Windowline, headlights, taillights, grille, fender flares, hood shape, driveing lights, all different. Yeah, the mirrors are about the same. But you could go back to the late '80s, early '90s and say the same thing about many sedans then, too.

For example, let's go back to '88-89

Lots of similarities here, too (and the similar era Ford taurus had similar cues), and you can instantly tell what era they are from, due to those similarities.

The Mercedes-knockoff grill on the Genesis is disgusting.

What bothers me most about the new Accord looking like a 5 series is that every time my wife sees one she says "hey that looks like a BMW."

This topic will inevitably lead to many chicken or the egg crossroads.

Though admittedly, you've a good point with the headlight halos example.

but on the other hand... Audi copied the concept of stylish DRLs, but arguably executed it better.

What's sad, some people think that the new M3 copied the G8's side gills,The 6 series and M6 had that design way before the G8.

that's not necessarily the same thing.

that's just a chrome stip trailing an indicator light.

I've pulled this article out before, but it's great: "The latest generation of Civic goes back to a tried-and-true formula in an attempt to regain momentum. And that formula is simply this: Subtly copy BMW’s 3 Series in order to give buyers a vehicle that has overtones of the one they wish they could afford."

"Honda designers borrowed and adapted BMW’s famed C-pillar “kink” to the new Civic, made certain the space between the tires and wheel openings matched those of the 3-Series, and reduced panel gaps until they were equal to those of the baby BMW."

"Honda engineers – like their Bavarian counterparts – use a bottom-hinged accelerator, and copied the pedal spacing from the – you guessed it – 3 Series."

Pontiac and BMW have always had design similarities. Don't know whos copying who but i think at some point there was a lawsuit over the kidney grills.
