If its really rattling and bothering you just take it back to BMW and have them tighten it, or tighten it yourself.

Don't worry about the exhaust rattling a little bit on cold start-up. It is not a problem and you'll wasting your time by getting it replaced. You don't want them touching your new car if there is not a real problem anyways.
Sorry if anyone thinks this is not a legitimate thread. I am new to the forum, and have no idea what this "nullcheck", banned individual, etc. is about. I simply wanted to see if other owners had experienced a similar issue. It appears that some have this issue and some do not. Thank you to everyone who has shared their thoughts.

My 335 does this too. Soon as it warms up it goes away. No worries...

Just picked up my 2015 M4 yesterday and heard the cold start rattle right away after I got home and let it sit a while. Definitely from the exhaust - but goes away in 30 seconds or so.

Seems to bypass the muffler on startup for some reason; you can hear the valves close after about a minute at idle.

There are two exhaust flaps in the muffler, they rattle on cold start and go away once warmed up.

Its normal.

My M3 has a deep metallic sound to it at cold start for 30 seconds or so, but it goes away. The M4 I test drove had the coke can in a trash can sound for the same length of time. As others have said, it sounds like the flaps in the exhaust. Hardly damaging, but probably very annoying.

I have the M4 and it had the same problem with a bad rattle on cold start. This is a well know problem with some of the mufflers. The dealer got authorization to replace the muffler last week. It had now been replaced and the metallic rattle is gone!

Same here. Metallic "can" rattle first cca 30 seconds when it's been quite could outside. Only started to appear after 2000 miles, but I wasn't in a climate cold enough before that, so maybe it's nothing to do with the miles.

This is my morning commute :-(

Definite metallic rattle which gets better as the car warms up ... but even when warm I have a noticeable rattle between 2K and 3K revs. The rattle is much more obvious in 'efficient' throttle setting when it isn't masked by the exhaust note.

The M4 I test drove and heard at start up rattled bad. It sounded like a tin can, and it was obviously coming from the muffler. That was definitely one of the negatives of the car.

If I went catless, I'd have the cold start feature off to be honest (if we are ever able to tune this car).

Yes...it does

Took delivery of my M4 2 weeks ago. In the morning, it absolutely rattles loud (especially in the garage) but for no more than 20-30 seconds. I actually kind a like it. It definitely gets ones attention in you are not expecting it.

Spencer25,

Same problem here but still rattles like crazy when warm. The worse resonance appears to around 1500-1900 rpm. This is really starting to annoy me (and my wife). The rattle is more noticeable during the warm-up cycle as the revs stay ~1500-1600 rpm!

Time to take it back to the dealer, I think.

Mad.

Apologies for resurrecting this thread, but I'm wondering if anyone has had BMW resolve this issue for them? Getting a little tired of having a wonderful car that sounds like an unmuffled lawnmower when it starts cold.

Like the others, mine goes away after 30-45 seconds or so, but it is incredibly irritating to have to listen to it at all. Like nails on a blackboard.

Solutions, anyone?

I have the rattle/drone now on my M-Performance exhaust. I will bring the car next week to BMW to let it checked .. and they told me when I installed that this could happen and they need to adjust it ..

For what it's worth, I heard a Ferrari Enzo start up last week, and it's not much different for the first period of time (okay, it's a LITTLE better, but still doesn't sound great).

Kind of annoying, but not too worried about since I plan on replacing with aftermarket exhaust.

Lol, I'll have to remember to refer to rattles as "metallic undertones" going forward.

As many have reported, my 335i rattles once upon startup. I'll be interested to compare the difference when my M is delivered.

The cold startup is super obnoxious and ricey sounding IMO. Worst part of the car. Warm starts are fine. . . But man have i been getting weird looks since it got brutally cold here leaving work lol. Ive been asked what happened to my exhaust twice as it sounds so much more obnoxious then it did two weeks ago.

Pull the exhaust flaps plug and I bet you won't get those funny looks anymore
