ever heard of a thing called 'low comparison base'`? What M3s were they selling a year ago? Not many i would imagine. Only now the car is available everywhere.

and do you guys think that people who buy M3 are first to feel the brunt of the financial crisis? M3 is hardly a daily driver for many people, for many its a second or third car.. those guys are with money and may be even making more money during crisis time, while the prices on M3 are so low that it makes full sense to buy those as dealers discount heavily.

Ask them how the 3 series is selling instead. I bet its not that peachy, about 10-15% down.

Some good points.
Last year it was the M5, M6 and Z4M (which was never a popular vehicle). So most people were spending roughly $75k (for the M5) to get into a new M car. This year's introduction of the M3 (the most popular M car) obviously saw sales shoot up.

Well, the general concensious is that large displacement NA engines are giving way to turbo/super-charging. I don't know if the V8 will be eliminated from the M3 in 2010; but I'd bet it'll happen at some point during the E92 generation.

Actually in Canada a E93 M3 Fully equipped is around 92,100$.
When they're letting it go at 68k 69k 70k then that's a hugeeeeee discount.
And when i say nothing i mean nothing in "relation" to M cars.

Forget the Usa for a minute since i'm talking about Canada here...
But when you can lease a M3 Convertible for 899$ a month when it would usually cost you 2000$ a month on a 36 month lease then you know these dealers are desperate!!
At 899$ a month is much more accessible to many other people then at 2000$ a month.
That is why they are moving much more cars.
When a guy walks in to Bmw looking to lease a 335 at about 1000$ a month and he can leave with an M3 for the same price, what do you think he's gonna choose.

The bottom line is since Bmw had a great year in 2007 they figured 2008 would be as good if not better.
So what did they do? Overly produce M cars thinking they would sell out.
Well take a look around the dealerships. In October they had hundreds and hundreds of M cars on their lots and didn't know what to do.
So what happened???
Huge Cashbacks from Bmw, 1% finance rates , 2-4% lease rates.
I mean since when is this the norm for M cars...
I guarantee you that if you were to take a look at the stats from all M cars sold from the day they were released to say September and then took a look at all M cars sold in October , November probably 70% of all these M's were sold in the past 2-3 months...

Just to give you guys an example for Canada :
2009 335 E92 Fully fully equipped : 0 Down 36 month lease 1245$ a month tax in
2008 M3 E92 Fully fully equipped : 0 Down 39 month lease 1050$ a month tax in
2009 335 E93 Fully fully equipped : 0 Down 36 month lease 1495$ a month tax in
2008 M3 E93 Fully fully equipped : 0 Down 39 month lease 1250$ a month tax in

I think this says it all...

you are saying that increase in sales does not equal.. sales? That makes no sense whatsoever. People do mix up revenues and earnings (another word for profit) sometimes, may be thats what you referred to. For the record: sales=revenues, it's the same bloody thing = top line.
Increase in sales or revenues does not equal increase in profits. That's of course true.

I think we MIGHT see a FI I6 in the NEXT M3, but I would guess the e90/e92 would stay a v8...

I actually just got a quote for $7,000 off MSRP on an `08 Sedan...

$714/month on lease.

I sent him back the info on my ZHP to see if he could "ballpark" a value on it...

If you sell one widget for $500 in 2007 and ten widgets for $10 in 2008 in which year was your revenue higher?

BMW was actually dissapointed by E9x M sales.

This report is just propaganda for the folks who aren't keeping tabs on model refreshes.

THERE WAS NO M3 OFFERED LAST YEAR.

The sad thing is, I believe in 2003 or 2004 BMW sold more Ms then they did this year with the introduction of the M3 although we won't see data for this year (total) until next QTR.

you know what it was higher than 05' 06 also and not by a small margin.. i love how people are complaining.. plus the v8 m3 kills the e46 in every stat and the fit and refinement is soooo much better.. i was in an e46 convertible m3 with smg and god the interior was pathetic.. the plastic along the door handles.. no wonder bmw is selling more in a tough time than even 4-5 years ago when the m3 was as hot as ever.. so keep coming up with BS and blaming it that there was no m3 at this time last year b/c they are killing sales in the m's most prominent years. and they can almost give them away they doubled production. and the 335 is a hot hot car.. so they have 2 cars with similar performance. though obviously the 335 caters to a much much larger audience.

They are giving them away, but only in the US and perhaps that country north of us. Elsewhere in the world BMW actually makes profit on their cars.

The article talks about M cars, not solely the M3. Of course introducing the M3 will create more M sales.
