Talking 328i vs 428i

I've read for the last few months that the N20 28i sounded completely different in the 4 Series than it does in the 3 Series, but only now have I been presented with good YouTube video that lets you hear the difference. And what a difference!

I've always quite liked the noise my 328i makes, but missed the gruff, almost V8 soundtrack of my E90 330d. I feel the 428i has struck the best of both worlds!

I'd like to know why the sound is so different! Can anyone explain that?

Here's my 2012 328i...

Here's a 2014 428i...

When you use the YouTube links(brackets) you only need the code that comes after the "=" sign.

For your first video...

"u2b]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cByWrpa2fiU[/u2b]"
you only need to put: cByWrpa2fiU in between the brackets(coding).

But the easiest thing is to just cut & paste the entire Htttp you tube address into your text/post... then the f30post board sw will do the rest. You really do not need to use the bracket coding. Just add the entire web url address.

Ohh I forgot to answer you main question...

Because BMW thinks(said so at the 4er launch in Portugal) that the person who buys the 4er wants a sporty car. That is why the car is lower, more sleeker and wider than the 3er. The 4er also is some 60% more rigid(chassis) than the 3er. I quite liked the 435i exhaust - that we drove on those press cars.

Btw... if you want a sporty exhaust tone you could also get the Performance Exhaust and or the PPK sw flash/tune from your bmw dealer.

Yeah I remember that release actually and understand the 4er is more sport orientated than the 3er. But is the dramatic change in sound due to exhaust trickery or has the engine been tinkered with?

EDIT: Is there a 28i PPK tune now?

It's looking like a 430d Gran Coupe or 435d xDrive Gran Coupe might be on the cards for the next car in mid 2015 however!

Interesting, I hadn't heard about that. Presumably this isn't simply about the inconsistent quality and sources of sound reproduction? Does this apply to all engines in the 4?

Sorry, I misspoke. I just assumed bmw would be bringing out a PPK for the x28i engine. So far they have not. But BMW does have a PE for the x28i models...

Is the F32 chassis actually more rigid than the F30 chassis? If I'm not mistaken, I believe the reference to having a stiffer chassis was in relation to the E9x 3.

Don't look for the PPK for x28i/xi. Stock 428's are already running sub 14 second 1/4. Adding the PPK to the 328/428 will enable the car to very similar performance-wise to a stock 335/435. BMW would rather the consumer spend a $6k premium on the I6 rather than $1500 for the PPK on the 2L 4cyl.

Sounds like a less-muffled intake to me. My S2000 has an aftermarket intake that gives it a sound very similar to the 428i vid. My 328i sounds just like yours.

I'd love to see pics of disassembled intakes from each car.
Or a vid of a 328i with an aftermarket intake.

It's not 3 vs 4 series, it's 2012 vs 2014. The 2014 3 series sounds the same as the new 4.

You guys do realize most of the engine "noise" in these videos is artificial. Reproduced by BMW's Active Sound feature, I wouldn't be surprised if they tuned it a little differently for the 428 vs 328.

I'm just surprised someone exceeded the recommended RPMs prior to the 1500 mile break in point. I hope it was their car, not a dealers.

There's no Active Sound in the 328i. I don't believe there is any in the 428i either...

My '14 328 sounds just like the 428 in that video. What did BMW change to have the increased sound of the '14 N20?

I think all n20 BMWs received the new sound for '14. The loaners I've had all sounded much better than my '13.

Just added the M Performance exhaust to my '14 328i today. Definitely a great improvement over the stock exhaust. Love the way it sounds.

F32 chassis is more rigid than the F30 yes, and the E9x by extension.

I am currently driving / testing a 428i and that car is so close if not better in some area over my 335i.

And the sound, i really cannot complain, it's not bad at all.

The coupe is better than the sedan! Really.

BTW: i love Chrono Cross too

People keep confusing the 4 series press release which stated the body was stiffer than the 3 series, meaning the e92 it replaced, not the F30 3 series. The figure was 40 or 60% stiffer.
