I'm just thinking that 10 MP is overkill when your arpature is only ~.7 inches.

i just picked up myself a Canon SD 600, it was on sale at Best Buy for $269.99 CDN, so around $235 USD, and its a pretty good camera, easy to use, 6 megapixel

i dont know much about cameras, but i know that canon is a pretty respectable brand when it comes to lenses and cameras in general, you guys should check it out

just to show you the difference.

photo #1 was taken with Consumer Compact Camera (Canon SD200).

photo #2 was taken with Prosumer Compact Camera (Canon Powershot Pro1).

photo #3 was taken with DSLR (Canon 20D with 28-70mm F2.8L).

hmm my pic is not working. check my "photo gallery" in my sig. those shots are mostly taken by DSLR.

I think what u wanna get is in between consumer conmpact camera and prosumer camera. You should be able to score one around 400 bux. I'd recommend Canon. Powershot S3 is an awesome camera.

I have the S80 - awesome point and shoot. It also has full control if you want it.

for a noob i woudl suggest the canon A series as previously stated... prosumer cameras are getting up near 500 where... you might as well get a small DSLR like nokon d40 or canon rebel

Wife bought me an SD800 for my birthday to replace my S400 that had seen many miles in my pocket. So many that the CF slot cover had to be taped shut.

Couple of things to think about when considering a digital point and shoot.

1. No matter how good the camera is, colors will still not come out as a lowly cheap 35mm point and shoot.

2. A camera is only as good as the lens. The tiny lenses on the point and shoots just can't get enough light in for most low light environments.

Those are the trade-offs for being able to throw it in your pocket. I don't have time or energy to tote around a body and a couple of lenses anymore so I'm happy enough to take the trade-offs. But don't expect pro results out of the pocket camera or you'll be disappointed.

That being said, I'm amazed at the low light performance of the SD800. Flash drops off pretty quick, but for being so small it does a great job. Red eye's still a huge problem though.

Oh and the SD800 is about a 1000x faster then my S400, no more capture lag. There is some lag waiting for the flash though.

Amazing to see a ~3 yr old thread brought back to life.
My suggestion of the Canon IXUS in those years , will now be replaced by the best portable digital camera with a sensor size 5 times any compact dc.
