I don't know what to make of this gadget. At least it is in the right car.

My thoughts exactly. But I can see its appeal on the race track to track your performance.

Bottom line, just another money making gadget from BMW.

Cool steering wheel but i wonder about the lap timer and 1/4 mile timer i think they are just that timers.
The lap timer start and stop when you press a button and 1/4 mile timer starts when the lights turns green but on a real dragstrip the race starts at green but the timing starts only when the car starts rolling.

It would be cool if the timers would use GPS to time laps ,sections and diffrent distances(as 1/4 mile),speed,G-forces etc and BMW could integrate that in the navigation display.
And additions to that show diffrent temperatures, pressures etc.
The Nissan GTR have something similar to that although i don't know how it measures lap times and such.

But i guess they need a much more accurate GPS unit like a Racelogic or Race technology for it to be really usefull but it would be cool if they make it standard or an option especially for the next M3/M4.

MUCH easier said than done in performance/track situations, especially if you want to nail the shift exactly right (at least for me). Also if car is modded, it revs quicker, making timing even more difficult/crucial. With the sound of the engine alone in the m3, I cannot nail the exact shift point with 100% accuracy. There's a reason the shift lights in the DCT exist..this seems even more compelling for a modded manual normally-aspirated M car where shift needs to occur at redline. This steering wheel looks pretty worthwhile in terms of practical application.

Big distraction? How is it any worse than the huge instrument cluster in front of you?

I absolutely love mine, I leave it on Water/Oil temp, it's great to know exactly where things are.

Looks interesting, but I wonder if it will be in the right place from a field of vision standpoint. Are the taller drivers going to be "looking down" for the info vs what is already available on the HUD?

For drivers only 1.5ft tall from the waiste to head (as shown in the video) the only prob is not being able to see the HUD.

Well one thing is really nice is SHIFT light. other things I don't know if you would have time to play with.

Anyway if you bought everything you want you can still spend big $$$ on this steering.

This steering wheel could remember you of F1 drivers for example, who also have same led lights for shifting and many other features

Lol, I agree. This belongs in a dedicated track car only.

Same here. The electronic wheel can't display DCT gear or PSI so I got the alcantara wheel and couldn't be happier with it.

The driver's (Tim Schrick, his father founded/owned Schrick camshafts) total time of 15.56 and a reaction time of 0.95 secs including. So the car did the quarter mile in 14.61 sec's. Not bad, for the real world streets where traction is much less than on a drag strip. Most cars trap at +1 second in the real world.

The Lap timer uses a transponder (sold separately) and you use that to time your laps. You can even use multiple transponders to break down a track into segments.

Well you are just wrong. Consumer Reports claims that "the lighted steering wheel with display adds common sense refinement to an otherwise practical car."
