I still think it would be better for them to prep and paint the existing hubs with something that will prevent them rusting again.

Congrats on getting a result though. I haven't pressed my dealer beyond their first refusal but I'm willing to.

Reminds me of when I had popping clutch pedal issues on my old E46 Sport Coupe. They asked me to leave my car there on two separate occasions so they could check it out and both times they said they couldn't find anything wrong with it. I told them I wasn't imagining it and showed them a wad of complaints from the E46Fanatics forum about the same thing. After pushing them they told me they would book me in to coincide with a visit from their area manager so he could take it out. After driving it for ten minutes he said he could feel it and they offered to fit a complete new clutch and assembly with new uprated parts (hmmm, new and uprated eh? an admission by BMW that there was an issue maybe? funny they just had these lying around!)

So....maybe it's time to get tough on my stealer? Dealing with a different stealer this time though

Wheels off,stripped hubs,coated and re-painted next wed and 535d as courtesy car...................sorted

Hey guys,

after reading this thread (yes, it's in the UK section ) I think the rusty hubs might be a regional issue. Some U.S. members also report rusty hubs, but most affected seem to be U.K. members.

I'm from germany, and my E91 and the E92 of a friend have absolutely no rust on the hubs, even though we both are using pretty agressive wheel cleaners and jet washes. There's only a slight corrosion (grey stains). Furthermore, I have never heard of a single issue in other german forums.

I thinkthe heavy corrosion you guys have is related to the transport over sea and the saltwater spray.

I agree though, these issues are unacceptable and I wish you all the best, just wanted to share my thoughts and observations.

Cheers

I have to say I would be surprised (and pee'd off) if my car was transported by sea in an exposed condition. They must be transported in enclosed areas in bespoke car freight shipping. I suspect the rust has more to do with salt used on UK roads.

We have lots of snow (and salt) over here, too. I have to admit though, we had a very mild winter and there wasn't much salt around.

I will definitely keep an eye on that.

EDIT: See?

I think we'd probably be in better shape here if it was just snow.

Even Richard Hammond from TopGear had to abandon motorised transport:

Thanks Dante

I had a 325d from the dealer for a day and loved it, so the 330d should be even better. Not far off your spec either: http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=68600

Only trouble is that it's probably at the dealer's PDI centre in Tewkesbury! Haven't had a call from them and the guys at work that live there think it should have stayed above water, so fingers crossed.

This really is defect by BMW and I'm really surprised so many of you have this problems. My car was in for a leak test for a week and we I got it back my disk hubs had several large rust spots on the hubs. There is plenty of solution on the market to correct this issue but it should be fixed by BMW.

The problem here is the brake pad dust + steel + water = a volatile soap for corrosion and not so much road salt. Best to hose the brake dust off the hubs when you can.

At least I’m going to make the dealer replace the hubs.

Brake Discs & Calipers

My discs and calipers are completely corroded, and BMW are no help saying not covered under warrenty - bare in mind I mean completely corroded and one a year old!!!

So I just going to replace, if I am replacing I am staying away from OEM in case they rust again. Any body recommend websites / products?

Thanks

I think a lot of people have had the same problem - if you do a search you'll see what I mean.

The best course of action seems to be to rub them down with a wire brush and paint them silver or whatever colour takes your fancy.

It is really poor for a car of such high price to be let down by such a poor quality element.

mine are rusty... BMW have a rubbish service system: take loads of money for very little care!

What with the car flashing up random filters and services at different times.. why not just have it all done in one go. Their reasoning is that is saves time, but in fact its a waste of time!! I have to keep visiting dealer and their 1hour service takes at least half the day, not a quick 1hr while you wait.

Meanwhile over at Mazda (I had a Mazda6 MPS and still have a Mazda3) they have a viewing window. If you told them you will wait before hand the car goes in and is done within 1hour. Also the hubs were painted each time (as they do rust, but its just courtesy that the dealer should have it back in mint shape).

So good work and a very good valet unlike the BMW "touchless" system.

Sounds like I am ranting but I have had to visit the dealer each week for the last month now for various warranty and service issues. Friendly dealer, but expensive and worthless service.

Has anyone considered taking them off and having the hubs (only) powder coated? It that even feasible?

Having my dealer look at the rusty hubs when I go in for service, they said they needed to have a look before deciding whether or not it's covered by warrenty.

Whilst my car was having it's first oil service today, I mentioned the rusty hub problem. I compared my car to other used cars of similar age on their lot. Another 56 plate and 07 plater, didn't seem to exhibit as much rust as mine todate.

So I've arranged an appointment with the BMW Regional Warranty Manager to discuss the problem and see what they're prepared to do about it.

Watch this space....

Keep us updated on this.

I have been tempted to snap a few photos and email BMW UK Customer Services to get their thoughts. As my wheels are the the 18" five spokes, the rust on the hubs is quite noticeable!

Can you PM me who you got involved at Bracknell? This may help my case and once we're both sorted, we can leverage the information to enable a result for other members on this forum. Thanks.

any rust eater and a good wire brush - then a primer and heat proof paint.
