Lost a socket in the transmission?

I was installing the intake manifold of my 1988 e30, when a socket fell off the extension of my ratchet. It landed between the block and the starter motor. When I tried to retrieve it, it moved a bit and then vanished. Is there any chance that there is a space near the starter sprocket big enough to allow a socket to fall into the transmission? If so, I guess I better fish it out. I've swapped the tranny of this car a few years ago, so moving the tranny back a few inches shouldn't be too awful. Would that do the trick?

I have an endoscope on the way from Hong Kong.....

Thanks

How could it fall INTO the transmission??? It might be down there somewhere **next** to it, but AFAIK, the transmission is a sealed unit, right?

Take it for a drive over some bumpy roads, if you hear a sudden "graunching" noise, then you know you have a problem...
