Star specs are great, but PSS are better suited for the street. I don't honestly know how the new ZII star specs are. The old ones however were indeed sticky in the dry (though Car and Driver tested some Kumho's which did better... interesting), and they handle track abuse better. Some people absolutely destroyed their PSS on track and even autox days, while star specs handle the abuse no problem. They also don't last very long at all unless you drove like a grandma, and I've heard that they don't inspire much confidence at all driving in the rain, where the PSS absolutely excel. The best thing about star specs is how great they are even cold.
@Jophy, I think you'll be happy with the V12. Your 128i doesn't have the ridiculous traction problems of tuned 135i's, and the V12 I had were amazing in the rain. Dry grip was much improved over stock tires, but not mind blowing. The thing I didn't like, though, was that they made the steering kinda feel like mush because of the super soft sidewalls. Maybe run them at a bit higher psi to help offset that. Also, they only lasted me like one summer (6ish months), but then again I absolutely kill tires because I live in the woods and love carving windy roads and accelerating like a maniac when nobody is around.

That's what my 128i came with from the factory.

Don't laugh....Conti Pure Contacts. 70K life and still have an AA traction rating. Very quiet. Put a set on the 128i 2k miles ago and am very pleased.

The PSS's are very hard to beat for the money. What a blend of performance, low noise and wear qualities in a max performance summer tire.
Bridgestone's S04 is another great tire.

I replaced the dealer Pirelli P Zero RFs with Conti Extreme Contact DWS last fall and they're great, including on moderate track last weekend. Had good experience with Michelin Pilot on last 323, but thought I'd try something else. At the track there were lots of Hankook on DD/track day cars, may try those next time around.

The "hot" tires this year for autocross seem to be the Rivals or Z2s. They're likely the best performing tire you can get for street legal tires besides some of the borderline R-comps like R888, etc. Rather, 140TW or greater which I think is the current SCCA Solo cutover for what is considered a "street" tire. The PSS is a much higher treadwear, and as much as I think Michelon knows how to build tires I think they're not going to match the grip of a Rival, Z2, RE-11, or RS3 and miraculously last 50-80% longer at 5-15% less price.
I have slightly more faith in the Z2 in the wet vs. the Rival due to the tread pattern. The Rival has no aqua channels. The Z1 was actually damn good in the wet when new. I did extremely well with Z1s in a local autocross (Winged Warrior in 2011) in sopping wet conditions, huge puddles, etc. even beating out a ton of AWD cars in the next class above mine. It does appear the Z2 has slightly less channeling, but it still way better than a Rival. I would recommend the Z2 for most people wanting a great performance tire with minimal concern over treadlife. The Z1 was pretty darn good in dry and wet conditions, and certainly perfectly safe on the street. PSS might be a good choice for those slightly more treadwear/life sensitive, and that's why I went with the PSS this time. Fair warning on the PSS, the 275/35/18 seems to have LESS actual tread than the 255/35/18 due to HUGE bands of void in the middle.

Just replaced a few days ago my Dunlop SP 3D Winter for a brand new set of Continental ExtremeContact DW (summer) in standard setting for the sport package. I spent some time choosing the right tires for the car since I am very picky about the handling of the car. I was a bit scared of the reviews that were regretting the steering feel. So far I am very happy with them, tons of grip, very quiet and the steering feel seems at least as good as with the stock RFT (the much hated GoodYear NCT5 RFT - rear lasted 9000 miles). I'll be able to tell more after a few spirited drives in the Colorado mountains.

Pilot Super Sports for sure. Interestingly enough I've seen a few sets get heat cycled out from much higher HP cars(E60 M5) driven highly aggressively on the street. That said, I don't think the 128i will have that issue.
235 square is your best performance setup.

Well I ordered the Pilot Sport 2s from costco, and when I went to have them mounted today, they told me that they could not since I did not have a spare. This to me sounds like some BS, since my brother had the PSS's mounted with no problem without a spare. Has anyone else had this problem?
