Looking at some new 18" wheels

Hey all I am brand new to this. Just picked up a 2011 335i xDrive. The car came with 17" wheels. I am looking at these 7 spoke 18's that come in 8" and 8.5" wide. I am totally sold on the oem sport suspension. It drives like a dream and I have no desire to change it. My goal is to decide to either get a square set up or go staggered with these 18" wheels. Another primary objective is to fill in the wheel gap with a meatier tire. I would also benefit form a meatier tire due to the condition of most roads here in NY.

Another factor- I purchased the wheel and tire protection plan for 5 years. Its to my understanding that as long as the wheels are OEM and under 21" and have the "original" tires on- I am warrantied. So I am unsure of tire options that are covered, as well as sizes. I am assuming run flats are my only choice for warranty coverage

Any advice would be great.

Above is a link of the specific wheel I was referencing. Thank you

Stock sizes are 225/40/18 and 255/35/18.

no real insight to the insurance thing, but I love those wheels. Decided to leave them on my car, so I added 10mm front and 15mm rear spacers to get rid of some of the offset gap.

When one gets a larger wheel, typically the tire gets a lower profile so that the total diameter is the same as the original tire.

For example, 225/40/18 becomes 235/35/19. So the tire isn't any meatier. It's actually thinner. The only way to reduce the appearance of gap is with spacers, pushing the wheel out further which gives some illusion that the gap is lessened or truly reduce gap through lowering springs.

Make sense?

If your sold on the OEM suspension, install spacers and see how you like it.

What you could do is use 225/45/18 and 255/40/18 with those 18x8 et34 and 18x8.5 et37. It's fine for xdrive the diameter difference is only 0.22% and since you aren't planning to lower the car i doubt there is going to be any rubbing issues. Here is a nice comparison with style 162 and stock vs. upsized tyres http://www.e90post.com/forums/showth...2#post14323772

Just remember those tyre sizes affect your speedo making it showing slower speed than you really are going, but in reality BMW's Speedo shows more than true speed from factory anyway. So it would be good idea to check with gps what's the true speed really is.

Is your car e90 or e92 and is it Lci or pre-lci? Anyways rear is most likely going to rub, since your rear wheel is more aggressive than the one in the link. Especially if you are lowered.

With an e92, you MAY need a slight fender roll in rear... maybe not. The fronts are fine.

Opposite. Speedo shows 60, you may be actually driving 65.

True i wrote/understood it wrong. My bad. I will edit the original post. By the way according to the calculator, it's 62mph true speed and speedo shows 60. This should be correct

Actually he was right. It reads 3mph high with stock sizes so if it says 63 you're actually going 60. Taller tires will make it more accurate.

Was i? To be honest i'm not sure anymore I though i was understanding it correctly at first but then started to think. Basically i understand it like this 225/40/18 compared to 225/45/18 says that

Speedo at 60mph will read 62mph. Doesn't it mean that Speedo will show 60mph, but you are going 62mph.

One thing is for sure BMW factory speedo is adjusted to show faster speed than you are really going.

I would assume you would have serious rubbing issues at rear with that upsized 255/40/18, because your rear wheel is more out than stock setup.

You could try 245/40/18 and 275/35/18 which might need fender roll to rear tho. http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=392383

As far as tyre brands look for premium brands Michelins, Continental, Bridgestone etc.

If we throw out the whole BMW speedometer is off... This video does a good job explaining the impact of increasing tire size.

Not everything from a 3 series i to a 3 series xi/x-drive is compatible. The springs from an i will work, shocks will not.

Yes going up to the 45 profile from 40 would mean you are going 2mph faster than you think. But the stock speedometer reads 3mph higher than your actual speed.

So if it says 63 you are really going 60 with stock tires and 62 with the taller tires.
