BMW's New Navigation System Knows Where You're Going

BMW is reportedly developing a new navigation element which can guess your next destination based on driving habit and time of day. BMW is sorry Dave, it cannot let you put this route at risk.

The new system would analyze past driving patterns, previous destinations, time of day and other variable and suggest a list of destinations you might be en-route to. It's not a terrible idea, but if you don't know where you're going or how to get there by the time the car has learned where you might be going, there's something wrong. Undoubtedly this technology will be paired with real time traffic, accident and weather notifications to make getting where you're going more reliably quick, but the notion of learning cars freaks us out.

Hey BMW: How about we just work on making the user interface on iDrive so it isn't annoying first?

Then we can talk about predictive navigation.

Instead of this useless crap, BMW should work on fuel pumps that don't fail on n54's, and n52's that don't tick...

I see this doing more harm than good. I mean, if it's a frequently traveled place, just put it in as your favorites. I can just imagine a lot of dudes scratching their head because of the navi when their wives ask, "honey... isn't this where all the hookers are?"

if that's the case, i'd think most of us know the route by heart. why in the world would we need the navigation's assistance or directions?

Why is this really necessary, I see about the whole 5 percent savings, but honestly.

I hope it can be turned off.

I wouldn't want it.

If you had to pay extra for it, who would chose his over another option, say logic 7?
If it's free and it can be turned off, fine, but if I really need the navigation, it's usually for a place that I have only been to a few times and don't really remember how to get there. These places are random, at the trips are at random times, since it is not a trip like from home to work. If it is such a random and not a frequent trip, the car will not pick up on it and I am not going to wait there for it, I'd rather just click two buttons and set it myself.

The only destinations that it is going to learn based on time of day and route are the ones you do often and that follow a pattern...why the fcvk would you need directions for the trips you take most often?
Only reason I see would be road closure or major traffic issues, because everyone knows traffic conditions at a certain time of day on the routes they take every day, or every other day.

This is a waste of money and not thought out very well, in my opinion.
I'm dumb though, BMW engineers are smarter so who knows.

It's a bit much, and likely will be useless for most people. However, I can see how for others like myself with a commute of several different possible routes, it could come in handy. I can take all backroads, or all highway, or a mixture in between (schuylkill expressway for philly people who know) and have to listen to traffic or check my iphone on my way every time because the traffic is somewhat unpredictable. I guess it would be saving the trouble of entering a destination every morning? and then just route me based on traffic. I don't hate it. Entering the destination is basically the worst part about navigation and often I skip and use the iphone because of it.

Now that I am rereading the article, I am thinking its not really about giving you navigation to places you already know you are going to.

Its about the car figuring out where you are going by the time of day and route and being able to adjust things like fuel burn, transmission settings etc from the data it has collected the other times you have taken the route in an effor to give you better performance and save fuel.

It that is all it does and runs in the background that is ok, just dont want it popping up on the nav.
