Big Brake Kits and "Mr. Brembo" ▝▚▖

Since we get asked about BBKs and their advantages quite often, we thought we'd write a quick post:

Some say, "Who brakes last, wins..."

While this may be true in some situations on-track, too many trackday enthusiasts and would-be Formula 1 drivers misconstrue the meaning. Time-on-throttle is important in maintaining a high average speed throughout any run, and stable braking/decelaration events provide more time on throttle and higher exit speeds. "Mr. Brembo" on the other hand, is too busy being brave and braking at the last possible moment drastically throwing the car’s accelerations all over the place.

This video explains this concept in detail with none other than Mr. Schumacher himself:

By lifting and/or braking slightly earlier, there is less chance of over-braking and shaving too much speed. In terms of the effects on the braking system, braking light and early also reduces the spike in heat as compared to applying heavier braking force within a shorter amount of time. This means a longer duration before brake fade occurs and longer brake pad/rotor life in the long run.

What's the advantage of a big brake kit ( bbk ) then?

Besides the aesthetic beauty that a quality big brake kit provides when filling the look of your setup, there are of course technical advantages. Most "big brake" systems feature a multiple-piston caliper which provides greater clamping force. With the ability to utilize more pistons, the use of brake pads with larger surface areas is possible with even pressure distribution across the brakepad. Regarding the rotors themselves, which typically range from 360-380mm for modern applications, the larger surface area and circumference provides more efficient heat and gas dissipation.

We’ll refrain from debating the positives and negatives of drilled, cross-drilled, and slotted rotors, but each has their advantages/disadvantages.

Using the example from earlier, braking slightly earlier for a longer duration of time, even with less pressure, does of course create a lot of heat. This is where the design and inherent advantages of a big brake kit come into effect. Even though you may be braking for a slightly longer period of time, the efficient heat dissipation of the bbk allows for consistent brake feel throughout the period and longer brake life/less brake fade throughout your entire driving session. We’ll save the effects of a bbk’s advantages in trailbraking for discussion. In Mr. Brembo’s case you will most likely see frequent puffs of smoke and hear tires screeching from too much brake input at the last second. Even so, Mr Brembo would still also benefit from the advantages of the bbk with much greater clamping force and faster heat dissipation.

In summary, a bbk will allow for greater amounts of error through more efficient heat management and consistent clamping force. Hopefully, "Mr. Brembo" will be the last of the late brakers

Sort of OT, but somewhat relevant to the topic.

No brakes at 150mph:
