We got a nice snow storm last night and my suprise i turned my windshield wipers on when i got into my car and heard a large pop! i knew right then and there i wasn't going to work and i called BMW and they told me to come right away. i drove 20 minutes to the closest dealership WITHOUT WINDSHIELD WIPERS WHILE IT WAS SLUSHY EVERYWHERE! i couldn't see at all only to get to BMW and for them to tell me i have to pay 700 DOLLARS to replace the motor of the wipers. i leased an 07 328xi and i can't believe that at 51,000 miles they are not going to cover it. I need some serious advice on how i can finangle this one. what should i say when i call them tomorrow and raise all hell. i was thinking something along the lines of i was going to get another bmw when my lease is up in february but theres no chance in hell now. how is that 1,000 over my miles heres a malfunction that i now have to pay for?

why do you think that the value of the BMW goes down 30% after purchase. They are not build to last. They are built for fun driving. Hence the reason why they say 50,000/ 4 yr warranty vs honda 5 yr 60,000 mile

well look at it this way. i pay more money for a lease on a bmw than i would a honda. you would expect a better built car which i of course feel like in the car or i wouldn't had leased it. i commute 40 miles back and forth to work monday through friday so i put a lot of mile on the car. the fact that the car depreciates has nothing to do with the brand of the car thats every car. a thousand miles shouldn't make a difference, to me anyway. a car is built to drive and with the expectation of failure you are provided with insurance aka warranty. all im saying is it should be covered.

Did you clear the snow from your windshield & unstick your wipers before you turned them on? It's not uncommon for the motor to burnout,strip the bolt of the wiper arm, or atleast pull it out of true regardless of manufacturer when you're trying to push heavy snow off your windshield. I used to hear it was a problem on Lexus/Toyota where their autowipe would activate upon startup.

if this is the case, then yes, it is the user that broke the motor. My suggestion is you can drive out to the dealer and tell them the truth and asked to talk to the service manager and see if they wil goodwill this fix for you since you are just over 1k miles. Raising hell is not going to get you anywhere since you are technically over the 50K limit.

I assumes you tried to use the wipper when it was covered in snow and drozen. If that is not the case, ignore my comment.

Wrong.

They are built to last. Maybe you should venture over to Bimmerforums and see how many guys are still driving E30's, E36's, etc. with over 100k+ on them and no problems.

And your argument about Honda vs. BMW's warranty makes no sense. Fail.

Your windshield wiper is meant to push rain off your windshield. Not as a shovel to remove snow. Or ice. You should always clear off your windshield and free your wipers before cranking them on.

Even if you were in the warranty period, I'd be surprised if they covered it. The parts didn't fail, you did something you weren't supposed to do and broke it. Simple as that.

at that statement. Plenty of BMWs go over 100k miles, my E34 has 175k for example, and is still running very strong. But they are not maintenance light cars like the Honda or Toyotas...they will require you to be on top of maintenance, but if you are you will be rewarded with a car that lasts a long time.

ask them for goodwill to fix this. Talk to the manager.If they don't want to help you out, then go to another dealer immediately. Another dealership may help you if the mileage is around 51K.

wiper motors shouldn't go out this early.

i talked to them today and raised hell hahaha they said they will bury it in the lease. so im not so mad about that anymore but they told me that the new lease program from 2010 is going to start around 550 dollars a month and i dont think i'll be getting another bmw i'm paying 470 for all bells and whistles now idk its a lot to think about

Tischer lists the part (61617161711 Windshield - Wiper and washer components - Motor and drive 2006 - 2008) for $173.64.

I can't imagine that the part would be much cheaper for a Honda Accord.

I also can't imagine owning any Eurocar out of warranty without a basic set of metric tools and a tame independent mechanic.
